Atari Panther - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Atari Panther was the 32-bit predecessor to the Atari Jaguar, developed by the same ex-Sinclair team Flare Technology responsible for the Flare One and Konix Multisystem.
It was scheduled to be released in 1991, but Atari decided to abandon the project in favor of the Atari Jaguar.
They were both rewritten for the Atari Jaguar upon the former console's demise.

Previous to the Panther decision, Atari were also toying with an ST based video game console, but this wouldn't have competed technically with the newer consoles now dominating the market.
Panther was very close to actually going into production, but was shelved at the last minute as a parallel project within Atari showed much more promise and much more power - that project gave birth to the Atari Jaguar nearly 2 years later.
Apparently, Atari was developing the Panther and Jaguar consoles in parallel, but the Jaguar suddenly began to overtake it's stable-mate.

It would appear that Atari’s original plan was to release the Panther first, and then follow it up with the Jaguar a few years later.
What ended up happening is that the Panther turned out to be a mishmash of technologies from internal Atari development, and Flair, which Atari had purchased to kickstart their next-generation console development.
Another Atari bit of gold, also from the Jaguar era, comes in the form of the Jaguar 2, or “Jag Duo” as it is sometimes referred to.
