Atari then licensed the smash arcade hit Space Invaders by Taito, which greatly increased the unit's popularity when it was released in May 1980, doubling sales again to over 2 million units.
Atari continued to scoop up licenses during the shelf life of the 2600, the most prominent of which included Pac-Man and E.T. Public disappointment with these two latter titles and the market saturation of bad third-party titles are cited as big reasons for the video game crash of 1983.
Atari 2600 games were originally limited to a maximum size of 4 kilobytes, while a CD-ROM, still the most common medium on which modern games are sold, can hold about 650 megabytes, or 162,000 times as much.

The VCS is a good-looking little machine made of fl and brown simulated-wood plastic.
Atari now has nearly 20 such competitors, which certainly contributed to the Warner Communication "bombshell" that Atari games were not selling as well as previously.
The Atari VCS versions are not identical to the coin-ops (neither are the 400/800 versions), but they capture the feel and personality of the games.

Also, the Atari had no on board secondary storage, whereas such storage in the form of hard disk drives on today's systems will often have a capacity of 100 GB or so.

So the idea around the Atari 2600 was to design a new system that would have a shelf life of up to 2-3 years.
The Atari 2600 version of Pac Man was written by Todd Fry who, although he was talented Atari 2600 programmer did not like Pac Man and did a sloppy half-effort of porting the game to the Atari 2600.
Todd also worked on the Atari Swordquest series and also was putting the finishing touches on an Atari 2600 version of Xevious (a feat of masterful programming since the game was so complex) when Atari was sold, 2600 Xevious was never finished or released.

The original VCS with it's kitchen grill looks (in both six and four button variants) and the newer VCS, including the 2600 junior, with it's door wedge (or ST with no keyboard) styling.
Most Atari machines seem to age looks-wise quite well, which is more than can be said for their competitors.

Atari wasn't very happy about having to deal with this new competition (as Atari was the sole producer of VCS games prior to Activision's formation), and at the time they didn't realize that this was the beginning of the end of their software dominance.
Atari proposed their "My First Computer" add-on; Entex proposed the "Piggyback"; Unitronics pushed "The Expander"; and Spectravideo came up with "Compumate." They all failed miserably (or weren't even released), and were crushed by competing home computers and console systems.
Atari was then brought back to life in February of 1998, when JTS sold Atari to Hasbro.

However, it’s worth noting that a few of the less compelling Atari VCS cartridge categories remain unrepresented here: sports games (see the Intellivision for early influential games in that category), board and card games, and educational games are all missing.
Video capability: Atari was better than most, but the colours were pretty restricted - not in range, but in the number of simultaneous different ones you could have on the screen at once.
So we should be able to find games on the Atari VCS that are really exemplary for their gameplay - and I think the ones I listed are some of several in that category.

Its games were simple and blocky, the sound was poor and the graphics left a lot to be desired, but bugger me were they addictive!

These are likely to be the carts that the VCS was bundled with.
I've always had a fascination with technology that brings a new concept to the mass market, thats why the Atari VCS appeals to me. Strangely at the time when it was a current leading edge games console I really hated it because it "wasn't a proper computer".
Many of the games for the VCS are designed around the limited computing power available at the time, these can be highly addictive - just invite some friends over and play some of the video olympics games (not basketball though because its too strange), you'll forget diablo and quake very quickly!

Indicates which paddle the mouse should emulate or that real Atari 2600 paddles are being used (defaults to paddle 0).

The Atari VCS, what can you say, it owned the video game market.
It didn't have the best graphics or the best sound but it still sold more systems and had more games than any other system at the time.
