Atari was also having other problems, which put additional pressure on the computer division and their senior managers.
The XL line was cancelled in its entirety in late 1984 after the company was sold to Jack Tramiel.

The Atari 1450XLD was supposed to be released around the summer to fall of 1984 and it too would never been released because of the sale of Atari, inc. to the Tramiel family.

Atari decided to use that extra ROM for the Missile Command game, which is bank-switched in and out much like how Atari BASIC is toggled on and off.
Atari has informed me, however, that the XG-1 and a revised Bug Hunt will be released as a separate package.
If Atari can provide a responsive cartridge production service for third party software vendors (something the old Atari never would have done), then we're likely to see the software base for the 8-bit Ataris grow with the popularity of the game industry, which is definitely on the rise again.

No doubt, everyone will recognize the names "Atari", "Commodore", and "IBM", as these three were the big players in home computing back in the early 80s.
By today's standards, the 800 XL was not much of a computer - It consisted of a beige keyboard with a built in cartridge drive (for playing those old Atari cartridges) and a powerpack which plugged into the back of the keyboard and a wall outlet.
To that end, this section is dedicated to that classic computer system, fans of the 800 XL, and some of the games that I grew up playing on the 800 XL.

With all those classic arcade titles under their belt, Atari were a prolific publisher for the format, and you’ll find that their best renditions of arcade classics are on this series of machines.
Thanks to hi-res colour, multi-channel sound and dedicated sprites, the XL versions are far closer to their arcade couterparts than any other versions of the time.
There are plenty of UK releases too, Level 9 adventure titles all appeared on the format, English Software chose the Atari 800 to release their eclectic range of titles, like the classic racer, Electraglide.

When the Atari boots up, it does some of its 'boot-up stuff' which includes looking for a disk drive connected and turned on which is set up as drive #1.
The Atari 850 Interface has it's "R: handler" 'built-in', which means the Atari also looks for an 850 (or other compatible interface) and receives the "R: handler" code from it.
If you have an Atari 1050 disk drive, you can use the program MULE to copy files, one file at a time, 20k chunks at a time, from the Atari to the IBM.

Since the Atari only has two interrupt lines (NMI and IRQ) of which just IRQ is connected to the parallel bus, we have to wire the six IRQ signals from the PC bus using diodes to a 74LS74 flip-flop.
The inverting output is used to connect the signal to Atari’s IRQ\ line.
If the Atari wants to write to a PC card, all required information is put to the address and data bus and the R/W\ signal drives low level.
