Atauro Island (also Pulau Atauro, Ataúro) is a small island situated 25km north of Dili, East Timor, on the extinct Wetar segment of the volcanic Inner Banda Arc, between the Indonesian islands of Alor and Wetar.
Atauro is a small and unstable island with a rugged landscape, frequented by landslides and a shortage of fresh water, especially during the drier months.
Atauro was colonized along with East Timor by Portugal in the 16th century.

Wetarese is the language of Wetar, an island in the south Moluccas, Indonesia, as well as the nearby islands Liran and Atauro, the latter belonging to East Timor.
On Atauro, there are three dialects of Wetarese spoken, Rahesuk in the north, Resuk in the southeast, and Raklungu in the southwest.
The language is closely related to Galoli, spoken on Timor on the north coast near Atauro.

Despite getting a lot of “stick” from my crook tooth, I decided that suffering in Atauro was probably going to be little different from suffering at home here.
Atauro is 30kms to the north of Dili and covers about 140 square kms.
