  Atavism
Atavism is also used to express the tendency to revert to one of the parent varieties or species in the case of a hybrid; this is the atavism of breeders.
Atavism is employed by a certain school of evolutionistic psychologists to express traits in the individual, especially the child, that are assumed to be, as it were, reminiscences of past conditions of the human race or its progenitors.
Atavism is commonly supposed to be a proof of the evolutlon of plants and animals, including man. Characters that were normal to some remote ancestor after having latent for thousands of generations suddenly reappear, thus give a clue to those sources to which the present living forms are to be traced back.

Atavism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An atavism can mean an organism that is a real or supposed evolutionary throwback; the unexpected appearance of primitive traits; or a reversion to or reappearance of a trait that had been present in a lineage in the past, but which had been absent in intervening generations.
Both the notion of atavism, and Haeckel's recapitulation theory, are saturated with notions of evolution as progress, as a march towards greater complexity and superior ability.
In addition, the concept of atavism as part of an individualistic explanation of the causes of criminal deviance was popularised by the Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso in the 1870’s.

However, genetic atavism is not accept by many scientists, who agree only to the extent that the theme is a controversial one.
Another reason why atavism theory is not well-accepted is that in the past it was used by Europeans to support racial discrimination.
It was assumed that people displaying atavisms were genetically inferior persons marked to become criminals, with bad moral characteristics etc. Such theories were openly used by colonial empires, by the nazis and others to justify their domination of other people.

Slough Feg: Atavism - PopMatters Music Review
In the liner notes to Slough Feg's new album, the word "atavism" is defined as the "reverence of or reversion to a past style, manner, outlook, or approach".
Comprised of 14 tracks, spanning 38 minutes, with only six surpassing the three-minute mark, Atavism takes a unique approach to old-style metal; although each track is brief, the epic feel is still present, thanks to smooth segues between each track.
Atavism couldn't be less fashionable these days, but with so many young American bands so bent on capitalizing on the immense popularity of metalcore, it's great to see a band like Slough Feg proudly flying the old-school flag.

Perhaps this illustrates how absurd the masculinization of language is. Norman suggested we invent our own word for my expanded definition of atavism, which is certainly a useful possibility.

Notes on the Democratic Defeat: Conservative Christian Atavism Ethos or "Christi :: ILCA Online :: Making Labor ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
According to the Washington Post columnist David Broder’s analysis of exit polls in the 2004 Presidential Elections, “about 22 percent of voters were white evangelical or born-again Christians, three-quarters of whom went for Bush.” This kind of White conservative Christian voting for the Republican party’s presidential candidate translated into 30% of Bush’s total national vote.
Against the background of the skillful application of a culture-innovative Christian atavism-ethos under Martin Luther King’s leadership in the 1950s and 1960s, the rightwing use of the atavism ethos by Christian fundamentalists through Republican party modalities in the 2004 presidential election was a depressing development.
It was no doubt a valid revitalization in the eyes of rank-and-file White Protestant and Catholic Christian fundamentalists, as measured by the fact that White Protestants gave Bush some 70% and White Catholics around 53% of their votes.

After their amazing, yet very successful “Traveler”, they decided to adopt a different approach to their power metal (the mastermind of the band told us that it would have been boring to produce a similar CD - read the interview in the interviews section).
What is ever more important is that the band manages to create its own distinct sound, something that is extremely difficult for a power metal band these days, that the genre is saturated.

Spare produced three books of magical writing and drawing, Earth Inferno (1905), The Book of Pleasure (Self Love): The Psychology of Ecstasy (1913), which contains the core of his philosophy, and The Focus of Life (1921).
And that is probably all that needs to be said about his magic here, although its components - the "Zos and the Kia"; "the death posture"; "sigils" and "the alphabet of desire", "atavism" and the rest - are increasingly bruited around in occult writing.
The most intelligent and interesting summary of Spare's sorcery is to be found in Gavin W. Semple' s already rare and sought-after 1995 book Zos-Kia (out of print and not in the British Library), from which I have lifted the distinction about the 'how' versus 'what' of belief.
