The Scissor Girls Herstory   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The record, titled From: The Scissor Girls To: The Imaginary Layer on Skeletons, was finally released as a 12" record, rather than the intended 10," in 1994.
Melowic received her GED and recorded one album with Chicago no wave supergroup Lake of Dracula, which included Weasel Walter from the Flying Luttenbachers on guitar, Marlon Magas from Couch on lead vocals, and Al Johnson (aka the Manhattanite) from Shorty and U.S. Maple on backing vocals.
She then recorded a piano and voice demo, convincing local indie Drag City to offer her a deal; after the Bride of No No dissolved in mid-2002, Youssefi re-recorded the demo with Isotope 217 bassist Matthew Lux and her boyfriend, John McEntire of Tortoise, on drums; the resulting Enantiodromia was issued in early 2003.

 Nation Time - Joe McPhee
This disc, originally released on Cj Records in 1971 and only now emerging on CD due to the strenuous efforts of Chicago's Atavistic Records, is a true sonic landmark, and deserves a much wider audience than it ever could have gained in the pre-digital era.
As such, it is probably the least satisfying of the three selections, but as it is half the length of the others, and given the power and fury and genius of the album as a whole, it is a small fault.
This is a record which few would have heard of were it not for the efforts of Atavistic Records, and specifically Chicago-area writer John Corbett (the curator of the Unheard Music series, which will include three more releases by McPhee before year's end).

Breaking new ground, crossing all boundaries, and recognizing no limits in sight, feeling, and especially sound, Atavistic releases treasure after treasure, disregarding and surpassing both the past and the present.
Tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson straddles the divide between disparate jazz generations, marrying the elegance and melodicism of classic swing and bop with the passion and fury of free jazz.
Thornton's single recording with this lineup is a brooding and unpredictable -- and often oddly elegant -- round of complex improvised jazz.

After recording a number of albums with Swans and Skin — an even more musically experimental side project — Jarboe stepped out on her own with Thirteen Masks, her surprisingly diverse 1992 debut.
Reissued with three bonus tracks by Atavistic after having been out-of-print for a number of years, Thirteen Masks is worth seeking out for listeners who prefer their music to be unpredictable, exhilarating and intellectually challenging.
Recorded over a number of different sessions, the material on Thirteen Masks evidently reflects the artist's vision and mindset at the particular time.

And speaking of jazz, Atavistic Records just pumped out an array of new, old releases, as well as some music from contemporary artists.
The thing about Liquid Soul, which celebrates the release of its newest record, "Here's the Deal," April 29 at the Metro, is that the band is so, SO, much cooler when they include a rapper.
The rest of the record doesn't break much new ground, by my guess is that LS' fans might be disappointed if it did.

CD Review of Leo Cuyers' Quartet - Heavy Days Are Here Again on Atavistic @ jazzreview.com
Chicago's Atavistic Records are reissuing some of the rarest avant-jazz records of the 70s & 80s that ever were, some recorded in America but received only minimal distribution back when (like Joe McPhee's 70s records) and those from Europe (the "Willi The Pig" album by the Irene Schweizer-John Tchicai Group: only 500 LPs pressed!).
Now, they've made this gem available again ('twas recorded in 1981) to music lovers that may not know (yet) how sorely it is needed to bring us-all good times.
Cuypers & co. are of the Dutch "school" of jazz/improv maniacs-guys that draw on American free jazz for inspiration but don't neglect the pre-free or the pre-bop periods that came before.

Atavistic Records: Down Beats and No Wave
By the same token, Atavistic’s home-base quality doesn’t just mean that they put out an initial salvo and let the artist fend for themselves finding labels or representation in the years to come.
Vandermark, of course, was Atavistic’s entrée into the world of contemporary improvised music, and it happened by chance through living in Chicago, which has had a rich history with the AACM, but also a scene around figures like drummer Hal Russell, which had seen very little recognition despite documentation from labels like Nessa.
Those initial Vandermark Five records issued by Atavistic “weren’t presented as jazz records, which is the downfall of a lot of records today—they fit into a genre.

This recording was made in 1963, when he enlarged his group to include two soloists: Michal Urbaniak, at that time still a tenor saxophonist (he later switched to the violin), and the young trumpeter from Cracow, Tomasz Stanko.
Both recorded pieces were refreshing and plain beautiful, though they are different, the first being a ballad, the other a swinger.

Life on Mars, Twenty-Five Years Later (interview)
The Atavistic disc is an interesting document, and when we created it back in 85 (it was originally a vinyl reissue on Lydia Lunch´s Widowspeak label) we were quite happy with it, as we didn’t have possession of the masters, and vinyl transcription was an iffy process back then.
If you listen to the last five tracks of the new cd on headphones, you place yourself right in the center of the band, which at that moment was, putting it mildly, a rather intense position.
Another difference is that the Atavistic disc is an anthology of all the Mars songs, several of which were never recorded in studio, so almost half of it is live.

CD Review of Luther Thomas / Human Arts Ensemble - Funky Donkey on Atavistic / Atavistic Unheard Music Series @ ...
In the 60s & 70s, the avante/free wing of jazz was getting the cold shoulder from the majors, so the musicians took matters into their own hands: forming their own labels & finding alternatives to clubs to perform.
Funky Donkey was recorded at a church in St. Louis in 1973, released on record in 1977 (on a small label, natch), then went real, real gone (as in unavailable) and re-released in 2001 by Chicago's Atavistic Records.
It is free of self-absorbed introspection, self-indulgent "interplay" and dry, cerebral twaddle - this music grabs you by the lapels, but the way a friend might, to shake you out of your doldrums, not like some pedantic mojo with an ax to grind.

12 CD box-set
The fact that record producer / presenter, Marek Winiarski, documented the series and is now releasing the material as a box set is truly remarkable, and I am very thankful to him and everyone who was involved in realizing this project; particularly the musicians, Jeb Bishop, Tim Daisy, Kent Kessler, and Dave Rempis.
When Marek originally proposed the idea of recording these concerts the intention was not to release everything as a box set, something that would have clearly been considered economically insane, but to select the strongest performances for use as  a double cd co-production with Atavistic.
There are a few problematic moments on these recordings: such as the  end of "Gyllene" from the third night, a screw on my baritone came loose during the final theme which made it impossible for me to play; and some sections of the new pieces are faulty, we were literally learning as we went along.

DOA - Haazz and Company - Unlawful Noise - Unheard Music Series
Currently the curator of ornithology at the National Museum of Natural History in Lisbon, Kees Hazevoet has completely distanced himself from his previous life as one of the prominent figures of the early European free jazz scene.
Split into two pieces, titled "Unlawful Noise" and "Agitprop Bounce," this record features Hazevoet leading a crew of accomplished professionals cranking out a fantastic racket, in the process boiling "music" down to its sweaty, barbaric essentials, the triad of noise, passion, and pure, undistilled, consciousness-piercing sound.
And when the interplay between piano, percussion, and Johnny Dyani's bass in the first few minutes of "Agitprop Bounce" gives way to a drum-less three-way dance between bass, piano, and suddenly assertive winds, you realize that sometimes music that sounds completely wrong can actually be one of the most god-damned right things you've ever heard.
