It is situated east of and across Garrard Boulevard from the present Burlington Northern Santa Fe (formerly Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad) yards and the former depot.
Atchison Village, built across the street from the former location of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad depot and yards, was designed with winding streets, spacious yards, simple one and two story wood duplexes and fourplexes and a community center and park.
Atchison Village was selected as the first pilot project because it was a coherent neighborhood with an existing organizational fabric, and it happened to be in one of Richmond's highest crime areas.

He dreamt of a railroad that ran along the old 19th century trading route called the Santa Fe trail that ran from Independence, Missouri, to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and on to the west coast of California.
In the early 1880s and 1890s the railroad was expanded to over 9,000 miles of track, some of which was lost in a reorganization stemming from a financial crisis that hit the company in 1893.
The railroad continued to operate into the 1980s, when in 1983 the Santa Fe holding company attempted a merger with Southern Pacific which was tied up in the courts until 1987, when the ICC rejected the merger.

The major asset of the upstart railroad was a federal land grant of a 200 foot right-of-way along the alignment of the future railroad, and twenty odd numbered sections of land per mile on each side of the tracks across New Mexico and Arizona territories.
By the end of the year, the upstart company had changed its name to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, and was attempting to raise money--to meet a condition of the grant that the line be completed to the Colorado border by December 31, 1872.
On September 22, 1995, the railroads holding companies merged, and on December 31, 1996 the railroads were combined as the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway.

The original main line extended from Atchison, Kansas, to the western boundary of the state, and was 470.58 miles in length; the Company also operating 39.28 miles of branch lines.
At North Topeka, the old junction depot was burned down on February 13, 1915 and rebuilt in 1915-16, on the opposite side of the track (south side).
At Topeka Station the old frame depot, which was a part of the old General Office, was abandoned in 1881 as a passenger station and a brick depot (present depot) built by Contractor J. Doyle of Topeka, by force account, (sinceenlarged).

hile the pioneering railroad in the Littleton area was the Denver and Rio Grande, which arrived in 1871, the behemoth would become the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe.

This historic document was printed by the Homer Lee Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of a train and an underprint of 10,000.
Originally chartered in January 11, 1859, under the name of Atchison and Topeka Railroad Company, the company changed its name to Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad on March 3, 1863.
Committees were formed to look after the interests of the bondholders, and in March 1895, company assets were sold to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway System.
