  Atlantic Records Story
Another record produced by Wexler and Ahmet Ertegun did the same thing; "Sh-Boom" by the Chords was a big hit on the R&B charts, but it was copied by a Canadian group, the Crew-Cuts, on Mercury Records, and their version buried the Chords' original.
The experience with these two records and several others led Ahmet and Jerry to reach the conclusion that it would be possible to expand their market from just the fl population, appealing to the young white population who were increasingly buying rhythm and blues based records.
Atco proved to be a profitable venture with the Coasters and Bobby Darin as artists, but even the establishment of the Atco label failed to solve the problems between Herb Abramson and Ahmet.

The very first Atco session (on November 26, '65) comprised five songs, one of which ("Dial L For Loneliness") remains unreleased (and likely lost forever due to an Atlantic warehouse fire in the early Seventies that resulted in the destruction of a huge amount of unreleased material by all of Atlantic's artists).

Whether from a generous allowance, summer job, weekend car-washing or lawn mowing or a newspaper delivery route, kids suddenly had as much ready cash as their elder siblings had sported just a few years earlier.
The pre-teen cash-cow opened the door to producers and record labels who would “cutesify” pop and rock to cater to younger audiences less concerned with contents than packaging.
All these artists made safe pop-rock “soundalikes” that raised few parental eyebrows, and were therefore supported to keep kids away from the increasingly rebellious and “dangerous” mainstream of rock psychedelia, sexual liberation, political protest and later, societal alienation.
