 Operation Atelopus - About Us
This project was developed with the goal of educating people on the perils facing these animals by documenting a fascinating and beautiful group of tropical amphibians, the harlequin frogs (toads) of Central and South America.
Atelopus are extremely vulnerable to disease and to the pressures placed on them from habitat destruction.
As a coalition of conservationists, scientists, hobbyists, and breeders, we are an international community dedicated to the preservation and study of these animals.

In the rainforest females "walk" several miles away from the breeding-stream and I think space to roam around is one of the basics which female atelopus need.
The main problem with atelopus seems to be that they get beat up pretty badly shipped to us and the fact that the male ratio is REALLY high when you import them...like you said Chris, they are generally imported during breeding season when all you'll find is males congregating...
I think a mantella breeder may have better luck breeding them as they are stream dwellers during that time and mantella breeders are used to that for their own.

Colombian frog believed extinct found alive
The discovery of what could be the last population of the painted frog (Atelopus ebenoides marinkellei) indicates the species has survived the fungus, providing hope that other species also might avoid elimination from the epidemic caused by a pathogenic fungus of unknown origin.
Professor Carlos Rocha and a team of researchers from the Pedagogical and Technological University of Boyacá - UTPC supported by Conservation International, the Darwin Initiative and the Fund for Environmental Action and Childhood made the discovery in early May in the deserts of Sarna and Toquilla in Boyacá in eastern Colombia.
The research was conducted as part of the Atelopus Initiative, a regional program that monitors the state of amphibian populations in the Tropical Andes Hotspot.

The montane slopes of the Central Cordilleran rainforests of west-central Panama are home to the few remaining populations of the endangered Panamanian Golden Frog, Atelopus zeteki.
Dunn, an early 20th century herpetologist, described the animals as a subspecies of Atelopus varius found in the mid-montane rainforests of El Valle de Anton in the Coclé Province of Panama.
An account on Central American Atelopus that included A. eteki was completed by Miller, who made some observations and notes on spatial interspersal patterns and provided a non-technical census in a remote population of Golden Frogs.

Currently we are monitoring original habitats of Atelopus pulcher (in severe decline due to Chytrid impact), Atelopus seminiferus (suspected Chytrid presence), Atelopus sp.
The goal of the Atelopus project is to monitor the long term environmental changes in the original habitats, which are considered to trigger the Chytrid fungus outbreak.
Rainer Schulte from INIBICO has however another theory, that the Chytrid fungus in South America is distributed in feathers of migrating water birds, due to the spotty pattern of infection outbreaks with long distances of several hundred to thousand km between them.

Range Comments: This species occurs in the southern part of the Colombian Andes in Cauca and Huila Departments, with a separate northern population (Atelopus ebenoides marinkellei) at the Páramo de las Papas, in the Department of Boyacá, in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia.
The major threat is likely to be chytridiomycosis, leading to a catastrophic population decline, as has occurred in many other montane species of Atelopus.
Habitat loss caused by agricultural expansion and cattle ranching, illegal crops, fumigation, and water sources loss are all threats, but there may be other unknown threats.
