 The Songs of Aterciopelados
At the forefront of this nuevo wave is Aterciopelados (the Velvety Ones), whose music would feel equally at home at a rock concert, electronica lounge, or salsa club.
But beginning with their second album, El Dorado, Aterciopelados began to expand their horizons, including traditional llanera rhythms of the Colombian countryside, as well as the flamenco-bolero sound of their first big hit, “Bolero Falaz.” “At first what we were doing was very elementary,” said Andrea.
Aterciopelados have always demonstrated an unflagging commitment to their music as art, and as an instrument of reaching people.

For all her feminist fire and subversiveness, though -- upon the formation of Aterciopelados in 1990, the pierced and tattooed Echeverri stunned her conservative country by singing a song about her unwillingness to ruin her silhouette by having children -- her voice is renowned for its enveloping purr and warmth.
The name Aterciopelados, aptly, translates as "the velvety ones" and is taken from a poem by Simone de Beauvoir -- a hint at both the high-mindedness and social consciousness of Echeverri and her collaborator in Aterciopelados, Héctor Buitrago.
Though Aterciopelados was still an active, touring band in 2005 with plans to continue recording, Echeverri again asserted her independent spirit that year by releasing a solo project.

Aterciopelados’ use of Colombian instrumentation is similar to Singh’s use of Indian instruments in his drum and bass music.
A good introduction to the sound of Aterciopelados can be found in Gozo Poderoso’s “Luto.” The song begins with two chords plucked on a traditional sounding nylon-stringed classical guitar before being joined by a mechanical, train-like programmed beat, which lazily counts the 6/8 time and a bass-heavy keyboard.
However, Aterciopelados manage to make something new of it, with one step in the hallway of tradition and one lamping in the vestibule of progress.

Still basically an undiscovered jewel to non-Latinos, Aterciopelados didn't let its status as an arena-size band stop it from tearing things up on the small Mexicali Rose stage.
What makes them all the more exciting is their incorporation of traditional Latin American music (boleros, rancheras) with rock and roll, lending them a refreshing edge.
