  AtheOS File System Information
The AtheOS file system (AFS) was originally used in the AtheOS operating system, and is now a part of the Syllable operating system.
It is an extension of the Be File System used in BeOS.
This allows the file system to search files in intelligent and flexible ways (such as a search for all songs by Elton John that exist on the hard drive).

He ceased development of it and the project is generally considered dead.
But the free availability of the source code under the GPL allowed other developers to launch Syllable, a fork from the stagnant AtheOS code base, with ongoing development.

A modular system to convert a file to any similar filetype(audio-audio, image-image, text-text), by way of conversion to a base filetype if there is no direct conversion module, rather than having dozens of foo2bar tools.
File management tools, invisibly to the user, can be aware of and take advantage of the base filesystem for performance, to find files, report accurate filesizes, etc. This could happen on a lower level than of programming the tool itself.
Certain system configuration files could be "pseudofiles", processes pretending to be files while the information is cached in memory and reloaded when the "file" is edited.

The New BFS (Brendan File System) - OSNews.com
Current file systems are horribly out-of-touch with the realities of what users need to effectively find, organize, and modify their vast quantities of files.
This is a damaging notion, and is born of the misplaced belief that any user-centered file system must necessarily be difficult to interface with for the programmer.
But where the Be file system made these queries persist at the application level, the BFS lets users and programmers create and extend groups by adding a search pattern to their metadata.

 BeOS
BeOS is a personal computer operating system developed by Be Incorporated in 1990 as a media OS.
A highly modular microkernel OS written in completely new code (and not based on UNIX, a common misconception due to Be's inclusion of the Bash command shell), it is optimised for digital media work - digital audio, digital video, and 3D graphics and animations.
It has an optimised 64-bit journaling and indexed file system called BFS, but rather than use a database BeOS relied on its low OS latencies to journal and query file attributes on the fly.

 Syllable (operating system) - ArticleWorld
AtheOS itself had a similar objective, after abandoning the idea of cloning AmigaOS, but the project stagnated, mainly because of the main developer's reluctance in accepting source code from others.
Just like AtheOS, it has a complete and elegant C++ API, making it a good choice for many developers and ensuring a rather fast growing of the number of ported applications.
Along with a well-built and very quick kernel, the system boots extremely fast and seems very responsive, a reason why Syllable is very highly regarded among operating systems of its kind.

SylSec, and the file-referencing system that it brings along with it in the form of the ReServ, requires a relatively high-performance, specialized filesystem to operate efficiently and to take advantage of it's native capabilities.
File Obfuscation is still rather unreliable, with faulty block tracking (both of "false-used" blocks and actually obfuscated file-blocks).
Since some user and system attributes are compulsory and others are heavily used and applied by the system, and since each EID's ACE is stored in a separate attribute, SylStor has a very high metadata:data ratio.

The topic of combining a database system (usually a conventional relational db system) with a file system to add meta-data, a richer set of attributes to files, has been a recurring discussion item on this and other sites.
This is a perfectly valid argument, as it is well known that the modern file systems are results of a long evolution and therefore have many excellent characteristics.
In general, database systems being combined with file systems are of the smaller, simpler variety.
