Atheism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some weak atheists are without any opinion regarding the existence of deities, either because of a lack of thought on the matter, a lack of interest in the matter (see apatheism), or a belief that the arguments and evidence provided by both theists and strong atheists are equally unpersuasive.
Some weak atheists feel that theism and strong atheism are equally untenable, on the grounds that faith is required both to assert and to deny the existence of deities, and as such both theism and strong atheism have the burden of proof placed on them to prove that a god does or doesn't exist.
Atheists almost uniformly reject this view and assert that they are as motivated towards moral behavior as anyone, citing a range of non-theistic sources of moral behavior, including: their upbringing; natural empathy, compassion and a human concern for others; respect for order, society, and law; and a desire for a good reputation and self-esteem.

Some strong atheists counter that for most mainstream concepts of a god this is a straw man fallacy, since strong atheism is based on a priori, rather than a posteriori arguments.
Other strong atheists, who rely on evidential grounds, simply maintain that the case for the nonexistence of gods is supported by more evidence than the case for the existence of gods, and that there is, in principle, nothing special about negatives that makes them impossible to prove [4] (http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/jeff_lowder/ipnegep.html) [5] (http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/richard_carrier/theory.html) [6] (http://www.discord.org/~lippard/debiak.html).

Under the broader definition of atheism (that is, the "condition of being without theistic beliefs"), which is characteristic of "weak atheism", nonbelief, disbelief or doubt of the existence of deities are forms of atheism.
However, many strong atheists, agnostics, and theists use a narrower definition of atheism, according to which it is the active "denial of the existence of God or gods".

Atheist are one of the more influential yet under-rated technical death metal bands of the early 90's.
The vocalist for Atheist, Kelly Shaefer, recently spoke with with us at length concerning Atheist and to a lesser degree about his new band Neurotica which was formed in 1994 as a (then) side-project.
All the bands made fun of us too man, well not all of them but a lot of the real hardcore death metal bands were like "what the fuck?!" The shit would just fly right over their head.

 Atheist - Death Metal
Using a heavy basis of fusion jazz, Atheist twist high-speed progressive death metal riffs into a series of motifs which as a whole express a melody structurally as a series of themes centrally referent by degree of consonance of modal compatibility with an overall melody.
The consequence of this exploratory and ambitious method is a wealth of potential notes and harmonies within which to play, allowing the alacritous expression of a fluid lead guitar style awake to fifty years of blues, jazz, rock and metal yet still alive on its own.
Trying too hard to mix mainstream-recognizable progressive jazz into their metal, Atheist make an album that is a mix between intelligently shredding metal and something like Phish, complete with the quirky randomness and other humorous self-referentiality that makes for excellent jazz but tragically poor metal.

Easily the most accessible of Atheist's three albums, 1993's Elements was recorded under duress from the band's record company, which forced them back into the studio after their initial breakup in order to fulfill their contractual obligations.
But remarkably, the group rose to the challenge, delivering another highly accomplished set that illustrated both a natural evolution of their sound and served as a worthy final chapter to their all-too-brief and very troubled trajectory.
Shedding most of the harsh dynamics of efforts past, Elements was the first Atheist LP to welcome melody with open arms, resulting in a far more immediate and organic listening experience throughout.

Holding true to their common death-metal roots, the band wanted somebody that could bring brutally heavy vocals to the table yet mix it with a touch of tone and originality.

Atheist were one of the mainstays of the Florida death metal scene of the late eighties, and by the time of their third album they had evolved into what they themselves term "death/jazz" (somewhat similar in style to Cynic, if less fusion-based).
Elements in particular won the band much acclaim and they seemed ready to jump to the next level, but internal strife led to their breakup in the mid-nineties, with Kelly Schaefer eventually forming the more rock-oriented band Neurotica (link below).
Shaefer and fellow guitarist Rand Burkey had seriously considered reforming the band in 2001, but it now appears that outside commitments (Neurotica a main one) will prevent this for the foreseeable future.
