		Speaking of outspoken atheists, I was at the Skeptics lecture yesterday (very interesting, all about the book of Revelation) and Michael Shermer made a pointed comment about the New Atheist thing, saying that neither he personally nor the Skeptics Society in general is out to eradicate religion or promote intolerance toward religion.
		I have scanned all three atheist sources carefully for polemic, and my honest judgment is that they are gentle by the standards of normal political commentary, say, or the standards of theater and arts critics.
		Atheists are heaped with abuse from every corner and their detractors are not called to account for their grossly offensive comments because, socially and politically, atheists do not count.

		One hears the statement, "I’m not an atheist; I’m an agnostic," as if agnostic were somehow a middle-ground between atheist and theist.
		According to the American College Dictionary, an atheist is "one who denies or disbelieves the existence of God or gods." This includes strong atheists, who deny the existence of gods with a positive statement ("There are no gods"), and weak atheists, who simply lack a belief in a god or gods.
		"Atheist" is everything from the center ("no opinion" – because this person lacks a positive belief in a god or gods) all the way to the left.

		The unsaid assumption here is that the atheist thinks their rational posture is "better" and we are expected to adhere to their preference.
