Athelm routed the forces of Nesmé on the battlefield as Aerell met with Nesmean leaders to assure them that their defeat was at hand, and that Thandell would survive.
The untimely death of Athelm was swift and unforseen.

The wells that the Romans knew, rededicated to Saint Andrew, still spring abundantly in the Bishop's garden and fill the moat of the Bishop's Palace, where dwell the famous bell-ringing Mute Swans, trained in the 19th century to pull on chains attached below a window to a small bell, for a reward in food.
Two centuries later, the first Bishop of Wells was Athelm (circa 909), who crowned King Athelstan.
Athelm and his nephew St Dunstan both became Archbishops of Canterbury.

With his parent's consent he was tonsured, received minor orders and served in the ancient church of St. Mary.
So well known did he become for devotion of learning that he is said to have have been summoned by his uncle Athelm, Archbishop of Canterbury, to enter his service.
By one of St. Dunstan's earliest biographers we are informed that the young scholar was introduced by his uncle to King Aethelstan, but there must be some mistake here, for Athelm and probably died about 923, and Aethelstan did not come to the throne till the following year.

Converted to Christianity and persecuted by his father, he was adopted as son by Athelm, an Anglo-Saxon noble, who had him well educated, and induced him to enter the church.
In 887 he accompanied Athelm on a visit to Rome, and eleven years later his patron died.
Odo was made Bishop of Ramsbury in 926, fought at the famous battle of Brunanburgh in 937, and was selected by Dunstan, then minister to King Edmund, to be Archbishop of Canterbury in 942.

Abbot Athelm, who caused the chapel to be built, died in 1084, so it must have been between those dates that the wooden chapel was built.

The original church on the site is believed to have been built by King Ina of the West Saxons between 695 and 707AD, beside the springs which were possibly regarded as a holy well, and dedicated to St. Andrew.
Andrews church became a cathedral in 909AD when the first Bishop of Wells, Athelm, was appointed by King Edward the Elder, and the see was formed.
The bones of seven Saxon Bishops buried in the original Church were transferred when it was dismantled in 1195, and their tombs can be seen quire aisles.

In that year, the two dioceses of Wessex were increased to five.
Wells became the seat of one of the new bishoprics and Athelm its first Bishop.

Hoerstan's brother, Athelm, was the first bishop of the new nearby see of Wells and later became Archbishop of Canterbury.
By this time Athelstan had been crowned king by Archbishop Athelm, Dunstan's uncle, and Dunstan went to court for his further education.

The Abbey at Glastonbury was a centre of learning, and housed scholars from as far away as Ireland.
The young Dunstan was educated at Glastonbury and then joined his uncle Athelm, Archbishop of Canterbury, at the royal court of King Athelstan.
Dunstan took to the monastic life much later than most; taking holy orders in 943, when he may already have reached 34 years.

The latter was the case at Abingdon the old Saxon Abbot, Athelm (or Athelhelm), held office till his death in 1084, when he was succeeded by Abbot Rainald, who had been one of the King's chaplains.
In the town which is called Uuiscelea in the time of Abbot Athelm there was no church; for it joined the parish of the priest of Sunningge (Sonning).
It must have been built before September 10th, 1084, because that was the date of Abbot Athelm's death; it could not have been dedicated before 1078, because that was the year of Osmund's appointment to the See of Salisbury.
