Comic Book Resources - CBR News: Exploring Adventure with "Athena Voltaire"
The adventure follows Athena from South America and the United States to Asia and the Middle East as she takes on Nazis, Occultists and Japanese secret agents all of whom have their eyes on the artifact as well.
"Athena Voltaire" was actually the first project that was submitted to Crossgen’s creator-owned line (at least the first project for their open call for submissions); Ian Feller of CrossGen told me so when I handed him the package.
CBR: Now, originally, Athena was slated to be published through Speakeasy Entertainment, with the first issue of the new mini actually seeing release the same week that publisher Adam Fortier announced that his company would be ceasing publishing operations.

Comics-and-More: Athena Voltaire: Flight of the Falcon
I was completely smitten with the first issue of this comic when it was released from Speakeasy early this year.
The whole controversy behind their decision to publish the comic in this way is explained in the back of this edition, but basically, the 1400+ backorders for the sold-out first issue from Speakeasy was quite the demand, but not enough to justify another print run that could potentially spell doom for the mini-series.
Athena Voltaire is a character the likes of which doesn't come along too often, and the characters that surround her are just as interesting and mysterious.

Athena is an aviatrix and adventurer, battling Nazis and monsters circa the 1930’s.
On the surface Athena may appear to be influenced by Indiana Jones or Lara Croft, but in reality, Athena is a throwback to the comics and adventure pulps of the 30’s and 40’s, and the tales of Robert E. Howard, Talbot Mundy, and Sax Rohmer.

I have worked very hard for over three years to make a web comic that would equal any comic being printed today, at least in part because people outside of the web comics community are simply ignorant of the worth of web comics or unfairly prejudiced against them.
I know it’s difficult for some to see a female comic book writer be so confident about her work’s worth and be willing to say so in writing (especially if it’s a web comic).
Perhaps because it’s not often displayed by female writers in comics, it can be a shock have a woman come out and proclaim her work’s worth, especially if she’s not Warren Ellis famous or whatever.
