A year ago, Athenaeum was leap-frogging around the country to support what Billboard magazine called a sure hit.
Today, the band is preparing for the second CD and second leg of its career, which begins Saturday at Ziggy's nightclub in Winston-Salem -- without one of its original guitarists, without its original management company and without a push from a big-time record label.
The magazine's editor, Timothy White, one of the country's most prominent rock journalists, described "Radiance" -- an album named after the Greensboro street where Kano once lived -- as a debut that contained some of the "biggest modern-rock radio smashes to arrive on the threshold of the new millennium."

The founders of the Athenaeum, sociopolitical activists who considered themselves the heirs of the liberal tradition of Immanuel Kant, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich von Schiller, and others, were young and idealistic—dedicated to establishing in their new homeland the unity, justice, and liberty they had been unable to find in Germany.
From the beginning, the Athenaeum was designed to include a gymnasium, locker rooms, and bowling alleys as well as meeting rooms, a restaurant, auditorium, ballroom, and outdoor beer garden with concert pavilion.

Modeled after the literary and scientific dining clubs of 19th century London, the Athenaeum was developed to promote intellectual and social exchange between students, faculty, and visiting luminaries, in an intimate and relaxed setting.

Moodie published in La Belle Assemblée, a fashionable women’s magazine, until 1830; then, for a few months she had some work published in a serious literary magazine, the Athenaeum—the type of periodical seen as an "antidote to the church and crown bias of the court and fashionable magazines" (41).
One contribution is a loyal song to the newly-crowned King William IV: "She had long been writing songs: there is no question of her loyalty; and the loyal song was an accepted genre in the periodicals to which she contributed: yet this was her first loyal song" (44).
I would take the facts assembled by Thurston to argue a contrary point of view: the Athenaeum experience does not signal a spiritual upheaval; her work in the Athenaeum is not recognizably different in form or content; and she has not "severed the sororial ligament" (52) of her "filiative" network.

A monument to the Victorian age?
If we go back to Leslie Stephen's initial conception of the Dictionary of National Biography the first feature that strikes the reader is the absence of any public statement of aims and intent: famously, the DNB had no introduction in which to proclaim its national or celebratory functions, probably because those were not its aims.
Stephen's first statement, placed in the The Athenaeum and announcing the inception of the new project, was a sober and factual introduction designed to inform, to attract potential contributors, and encourage the suggestion of subjects for the Dictionary.
38 The Athenaeum claimed that, in starting after the Germans began their biographical dictionary, and finishing before them, the British had administered ‘a handsome beating to their most formidable competitor’.
