 Kuranda Scenic Railway - The History - Kuranda Station
Vincent Price was in charge of the Railway Department’s architectural section when the Passenger Station Block, described as “after the style of a Swiss Chalet, the idea being to make Kuranda a show station”, was designed in 1910.
However Kuranda was one of the busiest stations at this time handling freight for many troops that were stationed on the Atherton Tablelands.
Construction of the existing station began in 1913, with the extension of the platform and yard, the signalling and interlocking of the station and the construction of the footbridge and concrete unit block station buildings.

Tolga, just outside Atherton, was the location of the 13th Army Advanced Ordnance Depot, and the small museum located in the old railway station has an interesting collection of photos and artifacts.
At the showgrounds there is a well-preserved igloo, still providing a service to local residents.
Across the road, local resident Tim Folewy has a collection of unit insignia plates, and nearby is the igloo that was once the cinema for the local AGH patients and staff.

Arrived Wigan early (recovery time to blame) so I popped in to see the station supervisor who told me there was flooding on the Salford to Bolton line (that storm was to blame) and there had also been lightening strikes.
At Gathurst, one station before Wigan, I noticed one of our conductors finishing off his doors and heading for Southport, seems normal, except I had expected to see him a lot earlier.
For Southport we were booked to go over the Atherton route to Wigan, semi-fast, and onto Southport, also semi-express.
