The Chola king Karikala was among the earliest recognisable historical figure in the Sangam literature.
The Chola Empire was at its zenith during the tenth and eleventh century C.E. Under Rajaraja Chola (Rajaraja The Great) and his son Rajendra Chola, the Cholas rose as a notable military, economic and cultural power in Asia.
In the age of Cholas, considered by many scholars as the most creative period of South Indian History, the whole of South India was for the first time brought under the sway of a single government, and a serious attempt was made to face and solve the problems of public administration.

Period of Athiththa Chola {A.D.871-907} In the year A.D.881 with the demise of Vijayalaya Chola his son Athiththa Chola {A.D.871-907} succeeded on the Chola throne, who was a co-regent of Vijayalaya from A.D.871.
Chola king Rajaraja-1 thereafter sent an ambassador to the co-regent of the king Baskara Ravi Varma-1 of Mahodai ruling from Uthahai (present Udhagamandalam also known as Udagai), namely Baskara Ravi Varma -2 probably a member from the family of Kulasekaras, requesting him to submit to Chola suzerainty and to pay tributes.
The Chola forces moved further into the Venad territory (Kolladesam) and captured the the region along with its seaport capital the Kollam(proper), which were at this time ruled by the chieftain Govardhana Marttanda appointed by king Baskara Ravi Varman - 1 of the Mahodayapuram in Kudamalainadu.

During the invasion of the Chola country, the Pandya king Varagunavarman II became an ally of Nripatunga, the eldest son of the Pallava king Nandivarman III.
During 903 C.E., the 32nd year of his reign, Aditya Chola, not satisfied with his subordinate position, planned and carried out an attack his erstwhile overlord, the Pallava king Aparajita.
Friendly relations appear to have existed between the Cheras and the Cholas in the reign of Aditya I. The Chera contemporary Sthanu Ravi is stated in inscriptions to have received royal honours from Aditya.

Athiththa died while in Thondainadu, and was suceeded by his son king Paranthaha Chola (A.D.907-954) at Thanjavur, who in the year A.D.910 captured the Pandiya country the southern region of the present Tamil Nadu state.
