 Sixty-Nine Competitors Represent Big 12 Conference in 2004 Athens Summer Olympics :: Through the years there have been over 500 competing athletes, 37 coaches and 24 support personnel with Big 12 Conference associations in the Olympics.
The first two alumnae from Big 12 schools in the Olympics were 1968 Nebraska discus ace Carol Frost, the mother of former Huskers' quarterback and NFL standout Scott Frost, and 1968 Colorado Alpine skier Sandra Shellworth.
Included in the 2004 Summer group are former Big 12 Female Athletes of the Year 1998-99 diver Vera Ilyina of Texas and 2002-03 softball pitcher Cat Osterman of the Longhorns.

After her athletic career, Blankers-Koen served as the team leader of the Dutch athletics team, from the to the 1968 Summer Olympics.
Blankers, a former triple jumper (participant in the 1928 Olympics) was a sports journalist and the coach of the Dutch women's athletics team, even though he originally thought women should not compete in sports – not an unusual opinion at the time.
