On 20 March 2006 it was reported that two athletes had gone missing from the Commonwealth Games village: Tanzanian boxer Omari Idd Kimweri and Bangladeshi runner Mohammad Tawhidul Islam.
These incidents were not without precedence: 27 athletes similarly disappeared from the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England (21 from Sierra Leone, 5 from Bangladesh and one from Pakistan), and over 80 athletes and officials overstayed their visas after the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Over recent years he was the driving force in setting up Abbey Athletic Club and was instrumental in the club becoming a major force in local athletics- only recently winning the NI Junior Cross Country title and the women’s section of the All Ireland Track and Field League for the past two seasons.
He acted as manager for many NI Cross Country and Track and Field teams, culminating in his role as manager of the Athletics team at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne last March.
His drive and enthusiasm for all aspects of athletics will be a great loss and he will be very sorely missed at all levels as a coach, administrator and event organiser.
