Hardware Extreme - AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 Processor Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Athlon 64 FX-51 is the first of the Athlon 64 FX to be launched.
The 64 basically means that it is a 64-bit processor built on AMD's Athlon 64 architecture (previously known as x86-64), and the FX comes from their launch partner, NVIDIA and their latest product line of GeForce FX.
This is basically the basic fundamental that AMD used in designing AMD's 8th generation processors, the Athlon 64 FX (as well as the Athlon 64 and Opteron).

Athlon 64 FX-57 uses the socket 939 pinout, the same platform used by Athlon 64 FX-55, Athlon 64 FX-53 and newer Athlon 64 CPUs like Athlon 64 4000+ and Athlon 64 3800+.
From FX-53 model on Athlon 64 FX uses the socket 939 platform, which is the same platform used by newer Athlon 64 CPUs.
Athlon 64 FX-55 is quoted at USD 915, on average, while Athlon 64 4000+ is quoted at USD 586, also on average.

 AMD's Athlon 64 4000+ and FX-55 processors - The Tech Report - Page 1
For the uninitiated, the Athlon 64 FX is AMD's image part, one of those super-expensive products that exist to demonstrate to the world what a company is capable of producing.
The real mind bender is the Athlon 64 4000+, which is basically the same darned thing as the Athlon 64 FX-53: an Athlon 64 processor clocked at 2.4GHz with dual memory channels and 1MB of L2 cache.
Since the Athlon 64 3800+ has a 512K L2 cache and a 2.4GHz heartbeat, you could be forgiven for expecting the 4000+ to have the same size cache and purr along at 2.6GHz.

Welcome to AnandTech.com [ Article: AMD Athlon 64 & Athlon 64 FX - It's Judgment Day]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
As we mentioned before, the 128KB L1 cache remains unchanged from the original Athlon XP and its exclusive nature means that the Athlon 64 has a total of 1088KB of cache for data storage (the remaining 64KB is for instruction storage).
Sigh, the Athlon 64 FX With the release of the 865PE and 865G chipsets, Intel has ensured that virtually all Pentium 4 processors on the market are paired with very high-bandwidth dual-channel memory subsystems.
For the Athlon 64 to become the mainstream part that AMD wants it to be, they need to significantly reduce the die size - a shrink that the move to 90nm would be able to do just that.

ZDNet India : Athlon 64 FX: A reality check
We tested the Athlon 64 in Legacy mode, running a 32-bit version of Windows XP as it will have to compete with a 32-bit Intel family, for at least the next year.
This again may be because of the lack of optimisation, but it also emphasises that finding applications for the Athlon 64 FX may be a problem.
The Athlon 64 FX is priced at $733, while the Pentium 4 3.2 GHz is available in the range of $600 to $700.

 [H] Enthusiast - AMD Athlon 64 FX-57
AMD’s Athlon 64 FX processor series is far from new, but there are a few new features in their FX-57 CPU that we are looking at today.
Rounding out AMD’s lineup is the Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor, the Athlon 64, the Sempron, and finally the aging Athlon XP.
Nowadays, the FX series is simply defined by a healthier clock speed as 1MB L2 caches have seeped down into the vanilla Athlon 64 line of CPUs.

AMD expects the bulk of Athlon 64 FX processors to be sold to computer enthusiasts in PIB (processor in a box) form or by small "extreme PC" system builders.
AMD expects the Athlon 64 FX to outperform the Athlon 64, as it is designed with more advanced features like higher clock speed and wider memory bandwidth; we expect it to be the highest-performing 32-bit PC processor at launch.
In 1,000-unit quantities, the Athlon 64 processor 3200+ is $417 and the Athlon 64 FX-51 is $733.

Athlon 64 FX vs Pentium 4 Extreme Edition. Part 4
Although Athlon XP 3200+ here strongly lags behind Intel processors, the new super-gamer's Athlon 64 FX-51 (and even the future Athlon 64 3400+ featuring a single memory channel) adds almost 20% of speed to Athlon XP and becomes a sure leader.
But at the "graphics" and "processor" sub-indices, the leaders are evident and change depending on the task: at graphics, Athlon 64 rules, whereas at the processor the Pentium 4 is significantly faster (by 38%!) (almost no matter if the L3 cache is available or not).
While Athlon 64 added 10 to 30% as compared to Athlon XP due to the more advanced micro architecture, then the greater L3 cache adds 3 to 10% of performance to Pentium 4 Extreme Edition.

The Athlon FX may well be the latter, and AMD is simply re-branding Opterons accordingly.
Rumours that emerged in July that AMD was working on a low-cost 32-bit chip called the Athlon FX, based on the Thorton core, as a replacement for the Duron, would suggest the Athlon 64 FX is a low-end part.
At the time of the Athlon FX rumours, our AMD sources told us the 'FX' naming scheme had nothing to do with Thorton, and in any case was only a suggestion for possible product branding.
