  AMD's Athlon XP 3200+ processor - The Tech Report - Page 1
Although the Athlon XP's effective bus clock speed is half that of the quad-pumped bus on the Pentium 4, both processors' nominal bus speeds are 200MHz.
The Athlon XP also has prefetch logic, but we've found it to perform relatively well in real-world benchmarks even when it has a pronounced set of disadvantages in clock speed, bus speed, and total memory throughput.
Beyond the slightly higher clock speed and the faster bus, the Athlon XP 3200+ isn't much different from previous spins of the "Barton" core.

Review - AMD Athlon XP // PC /// Eurogamer   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Also known as Palomino in some quarters, technology-wise Athlon XP isn't the jump from the original Athlon that the Pentium 4 was from Pentium III, but it still beats off its main competitor.
Athlon XP is likely to appeal to the average consumer for several reasons.
Athlon XP is being introduced at PR ratings of 1500+ (1.33GHz), 1600+ (1.4GHz), 1700+ (1.47GHz) and 1800+ (1.53GHz).

  Athlon XP 2000+ Review
However, the Athlon XP data series in red enjoys a simple technique called "block prefetching" which significantly closes with gap with the P4.
Although the Athlon XP is king of this test by large margins, the Athlon was not.
The huge difference between the Athlon XP and Athlon is likely due to the XP's hardware data prefetch engine.

All Barton-core Athlon XP processors use the 166MHz clock multiplier and 333 (166 times 2) front-side bus that is also used by the Athlon XP 2700+ and 2800+ processors.

It is no surprise that AMD's latest and greatest performs very well, as the Athlon XP is a higher clocked version of the same "Palomino" core found in the Athlon MP.
In a nutshell, the new Athlon XP is not characterized by a MHz number, but a performance rating (PR).
Based on these benchmarks, the Athlon XP receives a model number which indicates more or less the clockspeed of an equivalent Pentium 4 (according to AMD, the PR scheme is in fact based on the Thunderbird).

So the Athlon MP or even the Athlon XP platform will still be the preferred choice for certain applications.

 Connecting Athlon XP Bridges
I know a lot of people have been having problems unlocking the XP, and I wanted to get this article out as fast as possible, which did not allow time to buy a camera capable of that detail.
This is probably the reason that they began laser cutting huge pits into the bridges, because if you look at the photo below, the connection is not a simple copper bridge, as before, but appears to be a set of two of them, or perhaps a large copper bridge buried beneath the surface.
I ask that the first person who kills an Athlon XP dissect it to discover if this new pit cutting is a necessary adjustment due to a design change (widening the bridge) or if it's a "diabolical" attempt to stop overclockers on AMD's part.

Hardware Analysis - Athlon XP 3000+, AMD closing in on Intel - Introduction

The new Athlon XP 3000+ is based on AMD’s new 0.13-micron process which will also be used in manufacturing the upcoming Athlon-64.
The Athlon XP 3000+ is based on a new core, codename Barton, which has a number of advantages over the previous, Thoroughbred, Athlon XP core.

 Athlon XP 2000+ Review
With the Athlon XP, AMD has a core that has more execution units than the P4 does and a pipeline that is only half as deep as Intel’s chip.
With a smaller, simpler, more efficient design the Athlon XP is not as susceptible to regionalized overheating, and while the Pentium 4 has by far the more sophisticated thermal regulation circuitry, arguably it needs it.
Interestingly, the Athlon XP’s much shallower pipeline does not appear to be the limiting factor to the chip’s clock speed ramping.

Another area that has changed with the Athlon XP is core speed; the fastest Athlon ran at 1.4GHz, while the flagship Athlon XP manages 1.53GHz (with 1.47GHz, 1.4GHz, and 1.33GHz models available as well).
The 1.53GHz Athlon XP is formally called the Athlon XP 1800+, which is a number that could mean many things to many consumers.
Now, industry-standard benchmarking shows that the Athlon XP 1800+ is faster than a Pentium 4/2.0 in the vast majority of tests -- in fact, the XP even spanks the P4 in its own kitchen, using 3D games such as Quake III Arena.
