As innovative and challenging as the Athlon64 is, one thing that it is not (yet) is a great overclocker.
Athlon64 3200+ and Athlon64 3100+ Preproduction sample running at a 9 x Multiplier instead of the 10 x multiplier used in the 3200+ model.
Esoteric considerations aside, the issue at hand is the Athlon64 and, before going into overclocking, it is necessary to understand the limitations.

 Athlon64 family to grow | CNET News.com
Advanced Micro Devices will manipulate cache memory on its upcoming Athlon64 and existing Athlon XP processors to break out new members of the chip families, according to sources.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chipmaker will launch the Athlon64 with performance ratings of 3400+ and 3100+ in September and then crank the top performance rating up to 3700+ in the fourth quarter, according to sources.
The cache and bus reductions coming in Thorton fit the more traditional pattern of adjusting chips, but with at least one distinction: Typically, the stumped chips are given new brand names, but the plan is for Thorton to replace existing chips in the Athlon XP family.

HP lets some Athlon64 specs out of the bag | CNET News.com
Hewlett-Packard reveals some of the specs for Advanced Micro Devices' upcoming Athlon64 chip, which HP seems to be preparing to use in its PCs.
Following a series of delays, the Athlon64 is now set to debut in September.
In 2001, AMD showed a slide at its analyst meeting that stated the Athlon64, then code-named Clawhammer, to be sold with a model number of 3400.

 [H] Enthusiast - Athlon64 3400+
AMD has done us proud in that this is as far from a paper launch as you can get, as Athlon64 3400+ CPUs are already in stock and for sale.
The CPU that is really going to be on trial here, and likely steal a bit of the 3400+'s thunder is the Athlon64 3000+ that we saw soft-launched last month.
Finally, we have a blue collar Athlon64 and this is something that many of us have been waiting for.

 LostCircuits, CPU Guide
The new flagship processor tops at a high 12 x multiplier for a nominal speed of 2400 MHz, that, combined with the dual-channel memory interface is supposed to bring unprecedented performance to the Socket940 platform and reclaim the eroded victory for the Athlon64 family.
Concerns about a ceiling in clock speed have been rumored against the pending release of yet higher speed grades but as long as there is no proof of either scenario, claims are claims and rumors are just what they are, that is, rumors.
In this scenario, of course, another bunch of valid questions is whether this speed is really viable, whether there are margins as overt in terms of overclocking capability and last not least, how fast is this processor in real life applications.

 DriverHeaven.net: AMD Athlon 64 3800+/4800+
The Athlon64 3800+ looks much like any other Athlon64 on the exterior, it uses the standard 939pin design and metal heat spreader that you will have seen before however the design of the Venice core differs in a few major ways.
Next up on the changes is a new memory controller, the Venice core has resolved a long standing bug in the Athlon64 memory controller which affected some users who wanted to run dual sided DDR400 at 1T.
You would think that with two Athlon64 FX cores running on the same CPU die the thermal properties would mean a huge cooler would be required - however this is not the case and any cooler which works on an FX55 will handle the X2 with ease.

Athlon64: AMD Plays Its Trump Card Posted: 09-23-2003, 4:46 PM With the Athlon64 40% cheaper and only about 5%-7% slower (max) in games, I'd say the FX-51 is just not worth it.  I don't really see much incentive to go with that over the regular Athlon64 with that much of a price difference.
Athlon64: AMD Plays Its Trump Card Posted: 09-23-2003, 11:33 PM Maybe the question is code for "Why doesn't this look more like a Pentium and less like a Xeon?" :)  Taking a cynical view, the Pentium Extreme obviously serves one purpose, and one purpose only: an Athlon 64 debut-spoiler with minimal time and $...

 Computex 2003 - Athlon64 Motherboards Likely Delayed - PCSTATS.com
Given the announced transition of the Athlon64 FX processor to Socket 939 formfactor, the lifespan of the Socket 940 Athlon64 FX series is as unclear as it is confusing to observers.
Manufacturers producing Athlon64 motherboards may have as many as three or four variants for the Socket 754 Athlon64 processor, but when it came to the Athlon64 FX chips, there was rarely more than one or two boards on display - unless they were intended for purely sever applications.
When it comes to the question of whether to go Athlon64 FX (socket 940) or Athlon64 3200+ (socket 754), one Gigabyte rep PCstats spoke with figures the socket 754 Athlon64 3200+ path is a better route to go even though the FX-series packs in about 10-15% more performance right now.

Currently, Athlon64 processors are available in models from 2800+ to 3700+ for Socket 754, and in models from 3000+ to 4000+ for Socket 939 motherboards.
More recently, AMD has made a change to producing Athlon64 socket 939 processors which use the slightly modified ‘Winchester’ core, which is based on the 0.09 micron SOI manufacturing process.

Announcements from AMD and word-of-mouth all point to the performance of Athlon64 and Opteron being very close if not identical.
We also are hearing rumors from the Inquirer and elsewhere that the 754-pin Athlon64 will likely be introduced initially at 2.0GHz, with a revised (and more realistic) Performance Rating that will place it somewhere around 3200+, which is the current highest PR of the top Barton.
While the delay of Microsoft’s 64-bit Windows XP still will not allow us to test 64-bit Athlon64 performance, we do have the tools at hand to give a good idea of what to expect from 32-bit Athlon64 performance when it is introduced in the next few weeks.

While Athlon64 FX processors were undoubtedly expensive, overpriced, and only available in small quantities, they have done exactly what they were designed to do, to provide the best possible performance without having price as a concerning factor.
As AMD wants to keep a high-end aesthetic with their Athlon64 FX processors, they are currently only allowing one Athlon64 FX processor to be on the market at once.

Introducing the Athlon64 at a model number rating of 3100+ appears to indicate that the chip does not perform as well as AMD's current 32-bit Athlon XP 3200+ processor, released in May. The Athlon64 3100+ will have a clock speed of 1.8 GHz and 1 MB of level 2 cache, according to the HP document.
AMD is counting on the performance of the Athlon64 to help it compete against Intel's 90-nanometer Prescott processor, expected to launch in about September as well.

The Athlon64 CPU was one of AMD's most important products and, for good reasons, it has been quite successful since its launch late last year.
For comparison, we’ve chosen the Athlon64 3400+ CPU on the MSI K8N Neo (nForce3-250GB) motherboard as well as the Pentium4 3.0GHz (Northwood) and 3.2GHz Extreme Edition (Prescott) on the ASUS P4C800 motherboard.
Either ways, it seems that the current generation of the P4 architecture might not be able to compete well with the Athlon64 in the near future.
