It was severely satirised by John Stowell of Peel, in his "Literary Quixote." The author was Colonel Richard Townley, of Belfield Hall, near Rochdale, Lancashire.
An amusing Satire on "Townley’s Journal," without the author’s name, but written by John Stowell, the author of "The Retrospect," etc. Only one number appeared.

In June 1956, the Minister for Defence, P.A. McBride, wrote to the Prime Minister echoing the concerns of the Minister for Air, Athol Townley, relating to the “tremendous cost of re-equipping the Royal Australian Air Force”.
Townley had been advised by Lockheed that they could provide 66 F-104A fighters for £A44m.

Minister for Defence Athol Townley announced on 24 May 1962 that: at the invitation of the Republic of Vietnam Australia was sending a group [of up to 30] of military instructors to that country...
Townley asserted that Australia was acting under its SEATO obligations; and that it had been asked to send combat troops, but declined to do so.
In 1995, following the opening of Cabinet papers covered by the "Thirty Year Rule", much of what Menzies and Townley said was found to be untrue.

In the census of 1830 he was living in Athol, Warren County, New York, with a family of one male 20-30, one male 70-80 and one female 60-70.
He was pensioned for his services in the Revolutionary War.

On 19 November 1963, the then President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, the Australian Minister of Defence Athol Townley, and the U.S. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, shook hands in McNamara's Pentagon office over the Australian decision to buy the F-111A 'off the drawing board'.
This was a bold decision, particularly as it was to be another 13 months until aircraft 63-9766, the first pre-production F-111A, was to fly on 21 December 1964.

Lt Cdr Athol Townley was our CO and he chose to stay on in New Guinea when ML 817 was badly clobbered and extensively damaged in an air raid at Morobe on the eve of the AIF invasion of Lae.
ML 817 was towed all the way back to Sydney, extensively rebuilt then went back up north to rejoin the fray.
