  The Major Facets of Dzogchen
Mahayoga, anuyoga, and atiyoga all contain the same basic elements of practice on the tantra path to enlightenment.
atiyoga (dzogchen) emphasizes the second phase of the complete stage, at which we actualize the immediate causes for the enlightening mind and form bodies of a Buddha.
As preparation for the atiyoga stage of dzogchen practice, we need to practice the equivalent of the generation stage, as emphasized in mahayoga.

Wisdom Books - books on buddhism and buddhist subjects
The Sanskrit term atiyoga is defined as the "highest union" because it is the culmination of all vehicles, and of both the generation and perfection stages.
The view maintained by Atiyoga practitioners is that all things of cyclic existence (saæsära) and nirväôa are present as primordial buddhahood within the unique point of seminal energy (thig le nyag gcig), identified with the buddha-body of reality (chos sku).
The conduct observed by practitioners of Atiyoga is devoid of acceptance or rejection.

 Mahamudra and Atiyoga
Mahamudra and Atiyoga are particular forms of Buddhist spirituality: Mahamudra, the ‘Great Seal’, is considered by Tibetan teachers to be the essence of both the short path and the final instructions that conclude the gradual common and esoteric paths of Buddhist doctrines; Atiyoga or ‘Extreme Union’ represents the Buddhist Dzogchen or ‘Great Completeness’ doctrine.
This volume comprises commentaries on and the transliteration of some ancient Tibetan texts, authored by Buddhist mystics and Tantric teachers of Mahamudra and Atiyoga.
The volume will be useful to all students and scholars of Buddhist studies, particularly of the Buddhist Tantric tradition, and of Tibetan religion and culture.

History | Nyingma Lineage | Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche
The Nyingma tradition survived during this time through the strength of its yogic tradition that was not dependent on monasteries requiring royal patronage.
The tantras unique to the Nyingma are the three inner tantras: Mahayoga, Anuyoga and Atiyoga (Dzogchen).
Atiyoga (Dzogchen), the highest teaching, has three divisions: Semde, Longde and Mengakde.

 DOES BUSSHISM DISBELIEVE IN GOD?
Vajray›na Cosmogony As the early Buddhist theory of the bhavaºga was developed into the Mah›y›na theory of the tath›gatagarbha, the realization of which now took on paramount importance in meditative practice, the precise manner in which the buddha-nature gives rise to the phenomena world was further developed in the Vajray›na tradition.
Thus, in light of the theoretical progression from the bhavaºga to the tath›gatagarbha to the primordial wisdom of the absolute space of reality, Buddhism is not so simply non-theistic as it may appear at first glance.
Drawing on an analogy that is shared with the Atiyoga tradition illustrating the relation between the dharmak›ya and the minds of individual sentient beings, the Ved›ntin philosopher /aºkara likens Brahman to space, which is single and continuous, while each individual (jiva) is likened to the space confined inside a pot.

Mahayoga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As with the other yanas, Mahayoga represents both a scriptural division as well as a specific emphasis of both view and practice.
Mahayoga is said to emphasize the generation stage of Tantra, where the succeeding two divisions anuyoga and atiyoga emphasise the completion stage, and the synthesis or transcendence of the two, respectively.
Mahayoga scriptures are further divided into two sections, the Sadhana section, consisting of practice texts for meditation on specific deities, and the Tantra section.

The paper is divided into two parts: (i) a brief overview of the history of Buddhist tantra in India in order to set the stage for (ii) a systematic look at the significance of the subtle body in the Seminal Heart (*citta-tilaka, snying thig) variant of Atiyoga tantric traditions.
Finally, I suggest that subtle body representations were not only a site of conflict between competing Buddhist systems, but also involved a tension between the body as a passive site for the relocation of Buddhist discourses, and the bodies of individual Buddhists as creative dynamic agents that at times resisted these institutionalized intrusions.
I present the distinctive "direct transcendence" (thod rgal) contemplation at its center, and show how it cannot be assimilated to a deity yoga model or the classic subtle body paradigms of control and deep interiorization.

In a real sense, atiyoga is free from the notion of a cause and a result of awakening.
Interesting....Kunzang Dechen Lingpa, while teaching on His Yeshe Tsogyal terma, said that it is rare for Atiyoga to have a creation stage, but that His Yeshe Tsogyal is just such a practice...That it IS a atiyoga practice with a creation and completion stage.
In Atiyoga one realizes that one's aggregates, and so on are primordially self-perfected as Buddhas and so on-- so there is no creation at all and nothing to transform.
