Atlanta Flames - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When it was first announced that Atlanta would have an NHL franchise, many hockey observers thought that a team based in the southern United States was a ludicrous and foolish move, especially since the talent pool was ravaged by repeated expansion, and was soon to be raided by the upstart World Hockey Association.
Despite their inexperience as a team, the Flames were quite successful in the beginning of their rookie season, posting a 20-19-8 record by January 19, 1973 off of the personal success of their young goaltending tandem.
The Flames third season, 1974-75, was marked by disappointment as the team failed to qualify for the post-season.

 New Georgia Encyclopedia: Atlanta
Atlanta owes its origins to two important developments in the 1830s: the forcible removal of Native Americans (principally Creeks and Cherokees) from northwest Georgia and the extension of railroad lines into the state's interior.
Antebellum Atlanta was a city led by merchants and railroad men, not planters, and as sectional differences mounted, businessmen and voters in the city tended to oppose secession, often on economic grounds.
Atlanta is sometimes described as a "horizontal city." With few natural barriers to contain or restrict its growth, and greatly influenced by the arrival of the automobile and the increased mobility that it brought, the city has developed in a sprawling, dispersed fashion.
