Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is the most widely recognized orchestra and largest arts organization in the southeastern United States.
Shaw also led the ASO in meaningful engagement with the African American community, hiring the orchestra's first fl players, prompting the election of the first fl members of its board, bringing in many African Americans as guest conductors and performers, and forging relationships with the predominantly fl colleges of the Atlanta University Center.
Mindful of the need to train young instrumentalists for excellence in future musical careers, the ASO sponsors the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO), an ensemble of 120 players of high school age who are chosen by competitive audition, rehearse under ASO conductors and coaches, and give three or more public concerts each year.

From the opening bars, with the legendary, disciplined Atlanta chorus singing with a gutsy immediacy, the performance swept through the hall as if propelled on the same gales of wind and water that define the work itself.
If the orchestra didn’t quite manage the quietest of pianissimos now and then, such as in the opening, no matter – their playing was still of a very high caliber.
Atlanta must be absolutely thrilled to have someone who not only seems to bring out the best in the orchestra, but appears to have a savvy programming sense and the ability to rise to the occasion, artistically, on an evening when it really matters.

It isn’t particularly taxing vocally, and the orchestral parts aren’t all that demanding, but in order to pull off the work successfully, the intensity and depth of sentiment must be maintained, and the wedding between textual clarity and musical feeling has to be sustained.
For instance, there’s a superb balance among the woodwinds, chorus, soprano and tenor in the eighth movement.

That this was Robert Shaw’s last recording with the ASO and chorus, it is almost a relief that this piece isn’t a mournful dirge.
The orchestra is magnificent -- the soundstage is wide and deep with all the sections appropriately placed; and the chorus sounds exquisite, with an almost perfect balance between it and the orchestra.
If I were to nit-pick, I guess it would be that the vocal soloists are mixed a bit too loudly in comparison to the rest of the orchestra and chorus.
