Atlantic Avenue’s senery can change from a high-end shopping district, a fast food thruway, or a row auto body garages to flashing neon signs advertising cheap carwashes, or modest housing built near bodegas, chinese restaurants, gas stations, and yet more fast food.
In the 1700s, Atlantic Avenue was just a private road terminating at Ralph Patchen’s farm on the river; in 1855 it was renamed Atlantic Street before earning Avenue status in the 1870s.
The landscape of Atlantic Avenue is constantly evolving: this issue highlights some of the people and places of this historic district.

Bob Diamond, of the Brooklyn Historical Trolley Society, rediscovered the existance of the Atlantic Avenue tunnel in the 1970s, and he and his sturdy volunteers dug this passageway to get in to the space.
Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island were once laced with freight-train routes, carrying goods from ships and barges docked at Brooklyn piers further into Long Island for manufacturing, sale to residences, or to be loaded onto other barges for a trip across Long Island sound to continue further north.
The East New York Tunnel could not have been part of the same route that was served by the Atlantic Avenue tunnel, as the Atlantic Avenue tunnel was out of use the by the 1860s and I believe this East New York Tunnel was built much later.

The Long Island Railroad built the Atlantic Avenue tunnel to link the growing Brooklyn waterfront to the main rail line that extended across Long Island, which was the fastest route to Boston at the time.
Because early street trains were not powerful enough when fully loaded to climb the natural slope of Atlantic Avenue away from the waterfront, the rail went underground.

This tunnel was rediscovered by rail historian Bob Diamond, who is also the head of the Brooklyn Historic Railway Association, which is actively working to return streetcars to the streets of Brooklyn, New York.
Its route was under Atlantic Avenue (then "Street") between Boerum and Court Streets at the eastern end and Columbia and Hicks Streets at the western end.
