Atlantic Ocean - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Islands in the Atlantic Ocean include Svalbard, Greenland, Iceland, Rockall, Great Britain, Ireland, Fernando de Noronha, the Azores, the Madeira Islands, the Canaries, the Cape Verde Islands, Newfoundland, Bermuda, the West Indies, Ascension, St.
The South tide s in the Atlantic Ocean are semi- diurnal ; that is, two high tides occur during each 24 lunar hours.
Evidence indicates that it did not exist prior to 180 million years ago, when the continents that formed from the breakup of the ancestral supercontinent, Pangaea, were being rafted apart by the process of seafloor spreading.

This ocean occupies an elongated, S-shaped basin extending in a north-south direction and is divided into the North Atlantic and South Atlantic by equatorial counter currents at about 8 ° north latitude.
On the east, the dividing line between the Atlantic and the Indian oceans is the 20 ° east meridian.
The Atlantic is separated from the Arctic Ocean by a line from Greenland to southernmost Spitsbergen to northern Norway.

The width of the Atlantic varies from 2,848 km (1,769 mi) between Brazil and Liberia to about 4,830 km (3,000 mi) between the United States and northern Africa.

Atlantic basin hurricanes: Indices of climatic
This is due to the Atlantic basin having a marginal climatology for tropical cyclone activity because of its sensitivity to changes in vertical wind shear and lack of an oceanic monsoon trough (Gray et al.
Atlantic hurricane activity is enhanced during the west phase of the QBO and diminished in the east QBO years.
In contrast to this, the influence of Atlantic SSTs is occasionally not in phase with the overlying tropospheric circulation on the interannual timescale.

North Atlantic Basin Inversion/GSA Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The deformation post-dates the youngest synrift deposits in the Fundy basin and is hypothesized to be Middle Jurassic in age, based on similar inversion-related structures in offshore basins.
Therefore, inversion in the southern basins occurred while extension was continuing in the northern basins, and initiation of inversion was diachronous along the Atlantic margin.
The most likely cause of basin inversion was compression related to ridge push during the initial stages of seafloor spreading (when the crust was weakest as a result of extensional thinning and magmatism).

The Atlantic basin and sea floor
The Atlantic has grown, but the planet Earth has not, and the crumple zones where crustal plates collide can be seen as the Rockies in North America (5) and the Andes in South America (6).
Around the margins of the Atlantic ocean the sea floor rises steeply (the continental rise or continental slope) as the young ocean floor basalt is over-ridden by older, but less dense continental crust.
The wide continental shelves, and relatively low coasts of the Atlantic are typical of an ocean that is expanding.

Atlantic basin NTC can be skillfully predicted and the strength of the Atlantic Ocean thermohaline circulation can be inferred as SSTA* from North Atlantic SST anomalies from prior years.
Note that although Atlantic basin NTC activity in 2001 is expected to be approximately that of the long term average (100), U.S. hurricane landfall probability is expected to be above average.

The basin has a rich iron source from Saharan and Sahel dust, and geochemical evidence indicates that the North Atlantic subtropics are a region of active nitrogen fixation (Michaels et al., 1996; Gruber and Sarmiento, 1997).
While the North Atlantic is the best resolved basin in terms of our knowledge of the spatial distribution and temporal variability of air-sea CO flux, better constrained estimates are crucial to improve the identification and quantification of the regional distribution of fossil fuel carbon sinks (Fan et al., 1999).
Due to the North Atlantic basin's small size, and the generally broad extent and shallow depth of continental shelves surrounding the basin, continental margin-derived fluxes may be especially important.

PREDICTING ATLANTIC BASIN SEASONAL TROPICAL CYCLONE
Because of the circulation regime of the tropical North Atlantic, tropospheric vertical shear is dominated by the variations in the upper troposphere.
Thus the use of adjacent Atlantic temperature fields has already been shown to be useful in a forecasting mode and it is possible that additional use of coastal stations of temperature and pressure would also be of use for Sahel (and thus tropical cyclone activity) seasonal predictions.
In summary, the individual effects of the predictors as measured by linear correlation coefficients to various Atlantic basin tropical cyclone measures is shown in Table 3.

Of central importance is the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), which dictates much of the climate variability from the eastern seaboard of the United States to Siberia and from the Arctic to the subtropical Atlantic, especially during boreal winter.
The extratropical portion of the North Atlantic SST tripole also seems to play a significant role in the model, tending to counteract the dominant influence of the tropical Atlantic basin on NAO regimes.

In the last fortnight, Panamax bulk carrier rates initially took a bit of a dive in the first week and then recovered and regained all their lost ground in the second.
The weakening in the market was largely caused by a build-up of tonnage in the Atlantic and the Pacific plus pessimistic comments about the Panamax 'boom' ending.
However, one had only to look at the continuing emergence of long period timecharter orders and the high levels still being paid to all ages of vessel to realise that long-term optimism was still prevalent.
