  AtariAge - Atari 2600 - Atlantis (Imagic)
Atlantis is an interesting shooter that plays slightly like Missle Command but with several important differences.
Atlantis features some nice graphics, with well-animated explosions and an easy to learn control scheme.
It also is one of the first games to feature a sort of sequel, Cosmic Ark, which plays much differently from Atlantis, but is indicated in the Atlantis manual as continuing on the storyline of those who escaped Atlantis' fate.

Atari's advertising back in the 1980s showed whole families gathered around the television playing games on the 2600.
In Atlantis, the attack comes in waves - there are three different types of ships, two large and one small - in a role reversal, one kind of resembles an enlarged version of the ship from Defender.
Atlantis can be said to be a bit like Defender and a bit like Space Invaders, but in my opinion, it's more entertaining than either, and a fun game to this day.

 Atlantis Review (Atari 2600)
They were in tune with what was cool, and they weren’t afraid to let that be known, and they came up with cool game concepts that others were just afraid to try.
But, of course, with the limited architecture of the system, quite a few games were based on this principle, so by the time Atlantis was released to the unsuspecting world, very few would scream that it was in any way a rip off of Space Invaders, let alone anything else.
Out of the 400 million Atari games that were released, Atlantis was one of the few that still shines, and wasn’t a bore to review.

The escape ship seen at the end is the same sprite, and uses the same sound, as the scout ship in Cosmic Ark. Imagic's designers may have been more clever than anyone thought - not only were they making good games, but they connected their games together to form a mini-saga.
Another addictive entry, though a bit simpler than Atlantis, this game was way ahead of its time - an alien abduction game, even one which gives the player control of the aliens, would go over phenomenally with this decade's UFO enthusiasts.
Like Atlantis, Cosmic Ark ends with the scout ship escaping intact, but to my knowledge, these games never spawned a third chapter for the little ship's adventures.
