In July 2004 Atlas Air completed its restructuring plan and emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The airline was named after the famous Greek God Atlas, who supposedly carried the world on his shoulders.

Atlas Air holds a certificate that allows it to operate as a cargo air carrier under Part 121 of the FARs.
FAA alleged that Atlas Air operated a Boeing 747-400 on four occasions last September when the aircraft was not in an airworthy condition because the carrier failed to accomplish some required maintenance tasks on the aircraft.
Atlas Air has responded to the FAA's civil penalty letter, and the agency is in the process of reviewing that response.

Atlas and its creditors will ask a federal bankruptcy judge in Miami to approve the agreement at a hearing June 7, paving the way for the world's largest operator of 747 freighters to leave Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Atlas, once termed one of the healthiest airlines in all of aviation, filed for bankruptcy more than a year ago after its market for outsourced freighter operations on behalf of other airlines went into steep decline.
