  Atlas Cheetah
The Atlas Cheetah is a fighter aircraft of the South African Air Force.
As a result of this request, the Atlas Cheetah was born in the mid-eighties.
The Cheetah C can be distinguished from the Cheetah E by the fact that the Cheetah C has a one-piece windscreen, and a short but distinctive fuselage stretch between the cockpit and the engine intakes.

Scientists primarily study cheetahs in the wild by using radio tracking, in which a collar with a radio transmitter attached is placed around the neck of a cheetah.
Adult cheetahs measure 112 to 140 cm (44 to 55 in) from head to rear end and stand 66 to 94 cm (26 to 37 in) at the shoulder.
Male cheetahs are generally bigger than females, but the size differences between the sexes are not as large as in other big cats, such as lions, tigers, and jaguars.

Cheetahs are found in the wild only in Africa, but in the past their range extended into northern India and the Iranian plateau, where they were domesticated by aristocrats and used to hunt antelopes in much the same way as is still done with members of the greyhound family.
Cheetah fur was formerly regarded as a status symbol.
Cheetah cubs have a high mortality rate due to genetic factors and predation by carnivores, in competition with the cheetah, such as the lion and hyena.

None of the Cheetah variants ever saw combat in the Border War, but the Cheetah Es were used as permanent interceptor standby aircraft, with a minimum of two aircraft on round the clock alert status, until the end of the Border War in 1989.
A measure of the capabilities of the Cheetah C is the result of an Air-combat maneuvering (ACM) exercise between the Cheetah Cs of 2 Squadron and F-15E Strike Eagles of the 494th Fighter Squadron, USAF at RAF Lakenheath, after which the score tallies for each side were almost exactly equal.
The Cheetah D was the sole two-seater variant, and is mainly used operationally as a training aircraft for pilots converting to the Cheetah C, though does have a secondary attack capability, including the ability to deliver Precision-guided munitions (PGMs).

By the early 1990’s, the SAAF’s Mirage III fleet was obviously obsolete and Atlas Aircraft Corporation was tasked with rebuilding them in an attempt to maintain some semblance of operational capability.
The mouldings for the various intakes, aerials and strakes are rather "soft" and replacement of some, or all, with sprue/plasticard is an option, although to be fair once these have been fixed to the fuselage they look entirely adequate.
Conversion of the kit to a Cheetah E would be quite simple.

The Cheetah was qualified to carry locally-built South African weapons, such as the Kukri and Darter AAMs, which could be cued by the pilot's helmet-mounted sight, and Israeli weapons such as the Python AAM.
The Cheetah E was actually the first rolled out, the "E" designation it seems merely indicating that it was an updated Mirage IIIE, retaining the old Atar 09C engine.
There has been some interest in reengining the Cheetahs with Russian Klimov RD33-type turbofans, similar to the engines used on the MiG-29, and one Cheetah D was fitted with the Klimov engine on a trial basis.

The Atlas specs out with a 4.7 millisecond seek time compared to the 5.2 milliseconds claimed by the Cheetah.
Though the seek time in the 2nd sample of our Atlas 10k II reads 7.9 milliseconds vs the 7.8 turned in by the original, the difference is a cosmetic one presented by the peculiarities of rounding out to just two significant digits.
Though the Atlas 10k II improves upon its already phenomenal Business Disk WinMark score, its regression in IOMeter combined with the improvements delivered by the Cheetah (not to mention the current price gap… hopefully the Atlas will come down) drive us to give the nod to the 36LP.

Reader Review: Atlas 10K RPM U2 SCSI drive
Without modification, the Hyper enclosure allowed the Atlas to run at temperatures of 40-41 C, well within the Quantum's 0-50 C operating specs and about as cool as the Cheetah ran in tests with dedicated drive cooling systems cited in a June review of the Atlas 10K by Storage Review, a PC oriented webzine.
Since I don't have a Cheetah, I can't compare the results of the two drives with the ATTO benchmark, but my Atlas delivered MacBench 5.0 disk test scores of 2117 compared to the 1955 Mike listed for the Cheetah/Miles2 combination in a 400MHz machine on XLR8yourmac, more than an 8% increase in performance.
The Atlas' operating temperature is noted in the MacBench graph, a cool 28.4 C! For tests with ATTO tools, settings were the same except the system disk cache was set to its maximum, 7680K.

Today the Cheetah C is powered by the Atar 9k-50 engine but these may be replaced by Mig-29 or F-1 engines.
Of course seeing as the Cheetah C actually uses the same air frame as the Kfir (SA bought Kfir airframes to make the C and used older Mirage IIIs to make the earlier E models) they are very close.
The Kfir and the Cheetah are clearly superior in performance parameters but in terms of electronics and the like they are almost all equal except for the latest Kfir C-10 varients.

Cheetah 18XL showed higher (worse) time than Cheetah 36XL and lower (better) time than Cheetah 36LP, which corresponds to their parameters actually.
The results shown by Quantum Atlas 10K II HDDs strike as outstanding: the time shown is just excellent and the performance meets the stated specs 100%.
Quantum Atlas V and Seagate Barracuda 18XL appeared very far behind the drives with 10,000rpm rotation speed, while being almost twice as fast as the drives with 7,200rpm.

Maxtor Atlas 15K II versus Seagate Cheetah 15K.4
Proceeding with the Atlas vs. Cheetah comparison of the latest generation, we can ascertain that the linear read rate and the average read/write access rate are a tad better in Maxtor drives, the latter drives are much heavier and less economic in idle mode (no seek/read/write, but the drive is rotating).
Despite the success of Seagate Cheetah 15K.4 in reading large files, more complex operations with such files turned out beyond its power: Cheetah turned out several times(!) as slow as Maxtor in the imitation of copying large files (however, it's a frequent task for a server drive), the firmware update was of no help here.
Having done geometric averaging of the six previous graphs, we see that Maxtor Atlas 15K II is at an average much faster in these operations (reading, writing, and copying large and small files); Seagate Cheetah 15K.4 is outperformed almost twofold with the old firmware and by a quarter — with the new firmware.

Three different variants were created, the dual-seat Cheetah D, and the single-seat Cheetah E and Cheetah C. The Cheetah E was retired in 1992, and the SAAF currently has a mixture of 28 Cheetah Cs and Cheetah Ds in operational service.
The United Nations Arms Embargo in place from at the time prevented South Africa from purchasing new aircraft from other countries, thus making an upgrade of existing aircraft the only option.
Also, the virtually identical aerodynamic refinements (even down to shared canard geometries) of both Cheetah and Kfir strongly re-enforce this view, as does the puported fitment to some Kfir's of the Armscor/Denel's extremely compact and simple off-bore helmet mounted missile-aiming system.

The Cheetah X15 wrote data to its platters considerably faster than the Atlas did: It took a mere 43 seconds to write a 430MB image file, compared to the Atlas 10K's 63 seconds (47 percent faster).
Indeed, the Atlas 10K scored a major victory by transferring the 430MB image from one internal partition to another in an outstanding 106 seconds--30 seconds faster than the Cheetah X15 (28 percent faster) and more than a minute faster than the UDMA 66 drive (57 percent faster).
We found it difficult to tell the Atlas and Cheetah apart until we played several MPEG movies at the same time and noticed that the X15 offered smoother playback.
