Atlit is in immediate vicinity of the villages Neve Yam and Ein Carmel.
Atlit detainee camp was used by the British authorities to detain illegal immigrants to Palestine and ironically is now the base of one of Israel's elite commando units.

The castle which they built at Atlit in 1218 was given the name of Castrum Peregrinorum or Château des Pèlerins (Castle of the Pilgrims); the name Atlit dates from a later period.
Atlit was attacked by the Arabs for the first time in 1265.

The Phoenician harbor in the North Bay of Atlit is the only one along the Israeli coast with sufficient remains that permitted an investigation of the building techniques and harbor engineering prior to the Hellenistic period.
This harbor was connected to the southern settlement (which lay between the water and the Phoenician cemetery excavated by Johns), by kurkar slabs pavement that led from the shore to the gate exposed at the foot of the Crusader poterna.

In 1296, descendants of the 'Uwayrat tribe (a Tatar tribe) settled in 'Atlit and its vicinity.
'Atlit contained a Crusades Castle called Castle Peregrinorum (castle of the pilgrims), and a Muslim cemetery east of the Crusader castle which has an Arabic inscription dating to 1800s.

The Atlit Crusader fortress is located on the beach near the modern city by the same name.
