The reproducible generation of single sub-femtosecond pulses was not possible until 2003, when researchers created a method to precisely control the giant atomic dipole oscillations with intense waveform-controlled, few-cycle laser pulses.
Although the intensity of the 5-fs pulse leads to x-ray emission, the use of waveform-controlled light excites the atomic oscillations in a manner that is precisely reproducible from one laser shot to the next.

While the pulse is in the atom cloud, its group velocity and spatial extent are both proportional to the intensity of the coupling field and inversely proportional to the atom density.
The observed boomerang shape of the light pulse (at 5 µs) reflects that the light speed along the centreline of the condensate is significantly lower than at the edges due to the high atom density in the middle of the cloud.
The pulse delay is 12 µs, and the arrow indicates the point in time when the light pulse is slowed, compressed, and totally contained in the middle of the atom cloud.

Sending a light pulse into specially prepared rubidium (Rb) vapor, a group at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics led by Ron Walsworth and Mikhail Lukin has (1) slowed the pulse's "group velocity" to zero and (2) stored its information in the form of an atomic "spin wave," a collective excitation in the Rb atoms.

I can honestly say that Atomic Comics has done nothing but offer not only all of the FCBD books offered to us, but have never used it as a way of unloading "Damage Control".
Atomic Comics doesn't have to participate in any FCBD event, and when they do, that's a plus for both the comics industry and for the fans.
Every business has its ups and downs and due to some of the latter we've recently moved our club from Atomic to Samurai Comics, but Atomic was always helpful with the club and helping to promote comics to new people.

The light storage experiment begins with the Harvard- Smithsonian scientists shining a "control" laser beam into a glass cell filled with rubidium vapor (about 70-90 degrees Celsius), which puts the atoms into a conventional EIT state in which they cannot absorb light in the traditional sense.
The light in the vapor cell interacts with the atoms (see figure at http://www.aip.org/physnews/graphics), changing the atoms' spin states coherently and creating a joint atom-photon system known as a polariton.
In addition, an upcoming theory paper (Kocharavskaya et al., Phys Rev. Lett., 22 January) discusses a novel technique for making a light beam not only stop in its tracks but reverse its direction; this effect could be useful for non-linear optics applications.
