Topic: Atomic Rooster

Atomic Rooster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atomic Rooster was a British progressive rock group formed by ex-Crazy World of Arthur Brown members, Vincent Crane and Carl Palmer in 1969.
Between Palmer's departure (to be the third part of Emerson, Lake and Palmer), and the recording of a second album, guitarist John Cann (also credited as John Du Cann) joined the Rooster giving a whole new dimension to the music with his distinctive guitar attack.
The Atomic Rooster was also a kind of bomb used in World War I. This blinds the person with a sudden flash not to kill them.

Atomic Rooster's debut album is a showcase for the virtuosic talents of keyboardist Vincent Crane and drummer Carl Palmer, the latter defecting afterwards to form Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
On "Atomic Rooster," the songs are constructed primarily around unison guitar/organ riffs and jazz/blues themes, offering little more than platforms for Crane and Palmer to demonstrate their chops.
The key ingredients to Atomic Rooster's sound are apparent, with lots of Hammond organ/guitar interplay (the latter instrument overdubbed to the album by John Cann, who joined the band in time for the followup album "Death Walks Behind You"), along with Palmer's thunderous approach to the drums he would display to the fullest with ELP.

But Rooster without Vincent Crane is Hamlet without the Prince, the Pack without the Joker.
You can find other Rooster material around, like an EMI album of 1981 where Du Cann and Crane tried to re-forge the sound of their metallic years, as well as re-issues of broadcasts, live albums and compilations.
However, the pressures and self-induced personal complications surrounding a prolonged Dexy's recording session in Switzerland over the summer of 1984 provoked another chain of manic escapades followed by a spiral dive into depression and enforced hospitalisation, a pattern that was repeated with variations until his death.

Atomic Rooster is an upbeat but quite heavy affair, looped like Hawkwind, snarled (like early Boomtown Rats, oddly), old school and doomy like the band’s signature track ‘Death Walks Behind You’, Heepy due to Crane’s Hammond C3.
