Using an atomic oxygen treatment originally developed to mimic the upper reaches of the atmosphere, Bruce A. Banks and Sharon K. Miller have cleaned up damaged artwork that was once considered unsalvageable.
The oxygen radicals converted the carbonaceous soot and char on the paintings’ surfaces into volatile compounds such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
The researchers got the chance to try the atomic oxygen beam on a famous work of art in 1998 when they were approached by conservators from the Carnegie Museums in Pittsburgh.
