The dominant geological process affecting asteroids was thought to be collision with other asteroids, until recent observations of the Koronis family of asteroids sprung a surprise.
It is a variant of the Yarkovsky effect, a process in which thermal radiation from the Sun induces atoms and molecules to leave the surface of an asteroid, producing a tiny torque that, over many years, can influence the orbital speed.
These asteroids were formed in a single catastrophic collision several billion years ago, and the models predicted that their spins should show random distribution.
