Emblem of House Atreides from Emperor: Battle for Dune
In the original novels, House Atreides claims descent from Agamemnon, a son of Atreus, in Greek mythology.
Vorian Atreides was the thirteenth son of the Titan Agamemnon, one of the twenty Titans who conquered the Old Empire, and was a Human Trustee in Omnius' Machine Empire.

Secondly, the House Atreides is in a position where it could potentially undermine the fundamental source of Corrino power: The Corrinos' power base is their military strength, their specially trained army--the " Sardaukar "--who per soldier are five to ten times better fighters than the military forces of the other noble houses.
Realizing that the Atreides are next to impregnable on the home planet Caladan, which they have ruled wisely and well for centuries, and thus have an incredibly loyal populace, the Emperor realizes the Atreides need to be lured away from this safety.
When the Atreides take over Arrakis, they hope to befriend the Fremen, and recruit them into their service, and thus be able to defeat attacks by the Emperor's Sardaukar.

The novel tells the story of young Paul Atreides, heir apparent to Duke Leto Atreides and scion of House Atreides, as he and his family relocate to the planet Arrakis, the universe's only source of the spice melange.
Supplanting the Harkonnens, the Atreides are granted stewardship of the forbidding desert planet Arrakis, also known as "Dune," the only source of the nearly priceless spice melange that increases life expectancy threefold.
Paul Atreides is referred to as Mahdi at one point in the novel and in later novels, particularly Dune Messiah.

Emperor: Battle for Dune completes the character evolution of the Ordos; they are now so cold and emotionless in their drive for profitability, that they are not perceived as human beings by the other Houses.
While the Atreides and Harkonnen both possess human emotions (love and hate, respectively), despite being the opposites of each other, the Ordos are empty.
Like the Atreides world of Caladan, Draconis IV has been left mostly in its natural state, but it is as inhospitable as Giedi Prime.

Instead, Shaddam uses a centuries-old feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen as cover for his assault, enlisting the brilliant and power-hungry Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in a chance to eliminate his most hated rivals.
While they anticipate a trap, the Atreides are unable to withstand a devastating Harkonnen attack, supported by Imperial Sardaukar dressed as Harkonnen troops and aided by a traitor within House Atreides itself.
The Harkonnens manage to gain a spy in the Atreides inner household, and in doing so achieve something unique in Imperial history: they break the 'imperial conditioning' of a Suk doctor, which is believed to make a person incapable of consciously causing physical harm.

The Chakobsa language was a secret language, invented using mirabhasa principles for use by the Bhotani Assassins of the first war of Assassins.
The language itself is derived in part from the languages of the ancient Bhotani (the so-called Bhotani-jib), the first Imperial Assassins, as well as other obscure languages -- these elements being forged into a medium of speech, phonetically altered, designed to convey fine emotional subtleties -- the very principles of mirabhasa language.
The language mirrored the culture of its speakers as a hunting force since the Assassins hunted continuously.

Bereft of any other significant economic interest, Arrakis is the sole source of the "spice" melange, the psychoactive drug that allows the navigators of the Spacing Guild to move their starships faster than light through a form of hyperspace and thus maintain the coherence of this unlikely pseudo-medieval interstellar cul- ture.

Soon after the apparent defeat of House Atreides, it’s new Duke, Paul Atreides, establishes a formal union between the Fremen and the Atreides, with which he further unites the tribal Fremen people of Arrakis, and wages war against their common enemy, House Harkonnen, and eventually against the Imperial House Corrino itself.

The Atreide and Harkonnen are also divided in the way that they treat animals: Rabban eats the raw flesh from a cow, whilst Gurney Halleck goes to the trouble of saving Leto's dog during the Harkonnen assault on Arrakis.
Gurney is comfortable in his sexuality, and is able to oscillate between his masculine and feminine sides whenever the situation demands it.
Perhaps we are not able to cope with the story of Paul Atreides, with its idea of the perfect equilibrium of the masculine and feminine within us, with the blurring of their attendent binary oppositions.

Mother of Paul Atreides and grandmother of Leto II and Ghanima, Lady Jessica is the most important woman in Dune's lengthy history.
More significantly, she instilled the need to be Hetaira into all her descendants: into Paul Atreides, who welcomed Chani as his "companion;" into Leto II and Ghaninia, twin Hetairae to each other; and most notably and tragically into Alia, whose Hetaira nature betrayed her to the Baron Harkonnen's seductive intrapersonal companionship.
She endured alienation from her Sisters, her children and grandchildren, most of her Atreides associates, and all of Dune's common folk.

He finished the score in such quick time that the Sci-Fi channel was able to use the centerpiece cue of his score in their television previews for the show, heightening expectations in potential audiences.
A good example of this is the "Revolution" cue, which appears directly after the main titles on album, and gives you a good feeling of Alia's slow loss of reality and thus, her loss of control over her empire.
Early in Leto's appearances, Tyler's House Atreides theme accompanies his character, but by the end of the film, as Leto has merged with the worms (doesn't this guy wear a shirt ever again?), he and Ganima are the product of that romantic between Paul (Atreides) and Chani (Fremen) and the theme thus becomes theirs.
