 Punknews.org | Atreyu - The Curse (2004)
I still think that album is one of the better that the genre has seen, and so the new Atreyu album has been one of the ones I was more excited about hearing this year.
This is where the first portion of their identity crisis comes in, because in this song, Atreyu has seemingly tossed out the “core” of the genre and gone straight with metal.
The sheer ferocity of their metal-tinged songs is now what I remember them for on this album, rather than the serenity of their melodies from “Suicide Notes...” I would call it an evolution of the band, but they are not consistent enough for it to be a full evolution.

I never heard much Atreyu just their most famous song that as well as appearing in burnout 3's track list is played at many a party or gig my friends have been to, I am of course on about the immense "Right side of the bed".
But it is the melodic singing adopted in the anthemic choruses of songs such as 'The Crimson' and 'Right Side of the Bed' that truly mark this album, and the band as one of the leading acts in the overcrowded genre of metalcore.
If Atreyu can make as great a leap in quality for their third album as they did for this one, then we may be looking at album of the year.

B+For anyone who saw Atreyu live as they were in the process of writing The Curse, there was some reason to worry.
The Curse is a reassuring reminder that even with silly choreography and sillier makeup, Atreyu are among the best acts in modern hardcore at a time when most of the imitators are finally falling out of fashion.
Regardless, The Curse represents Atreyu really hitting their stride more often than not, capitalizing quite nicely on the promise of their debut.

Atreyu are the top selling band of "the new retro-metal-emo-core" movement, whatever the fucking bloody hell that means (does it have something to do with dorks in eyeliner ripping off stale In Flames riffs, by any chance?).
But hey, Atreyu are on to something with The Curse, and to their credit, there's not an overabundance of stolen riffs or ideas from Maiden or In Flames here (and I see no eyeliner in the band pic!).
But cynicism aside, the truth is bands like Atreyu (not to be confused with that band that features the singer for Earth Crisis, whose name escapes me but sounds a lot like Atreyu) offer up a lot more than most hardcore bands ever could.
