Topic: Atrial natriuretic peptide

In the News (Fri 17 May 13)

  Rollin, Mol Vis 2004; 10:450-457.
ANP was detected in the fibrovascular epiretinal tissue of patients with PDR.
ANP is a member of the natriuretic peptide (NP) family, a group of cardiovascular cyclic peptide hormones with diuretic, natriuretic, and vasodilatory properties [12].
Given that ANP is an antiangiogenic [11] and vascular antipermeability factor [25], we suggest that this peptide may have a role in the vascular pathobiology of diabetic retinopathy.

Atrial natriuretic peptide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) or atriopeptin, is a polypeptide hormone involved in the homeostatic control of body water, sodium, and adiposity.
ANP is a 28 amino acid peptide with a 17 AA ring, and is closely related to BNP (Brain Natriuretic Peptide, but produced largely in the heart) and CNP (C-type Natriuretic Peptide) which all share the same amino acid ring.
ANP was discovered in 1981 by a team in Ottawa led by Mercedes Kuroski de Bold after they made the seminal observation that injection of atrial (but not ventricular) tissue extracts into rats caused copious natriuresis.

 Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP)
Elevation of the activity of ANP gene represents the return to fetal phenotype in response to ventricular load, together with the induction of genes of skeletal alpha actin, myosin light chain 1 and beta-tropomyosin (Nadal-Ginard & Mahdavi 1993).
Thus, increased adult ANP levels are detected in adult congestive heart failure, chronic renal failure and in severe essential hypertension (Ruskoaho 1992, Yandle 1994).
Fetal ANP levels showed a significant rise after transfusion, and this rise was related to the percentage of fetoplacental blood volume transfused.

NEJM -- Atrial natriuretic peptide and atrial pressure in patients with congestive heart failure
To define the relation between atrial pressures and the release of atrial natriuretic peptide, we measured plasma concentrations of the peptide in 26 patients with cardiac disease--11 with normal atrial pressures and 15 with elevated atrial pressures (11 of these 15 had elevated pressures in both atria).
In the patients with elevated atrial pressures, peptide concentrations were increased twofold in peripheral venous, right atrial, pulmonary arterial, and systemic arterial plasma, as compared with the concentrations in the patients with normal atrial pressures.
A step-up in peptide concentration was seen between the venous and right atrial plasma (P less than 0.002) and between the pulmonary and systemic arterial plasma (P less than 0.01), suggesting release of the peptide from the atria.

Brain natriuretic peptide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brain natriuretic peptide (also known as B-type natriuretic peptide or "GC-B") is a 32-amino-acid polypeptide secreted by the ventricles of the heart in response to excessive stretching of myocytes (heart muscles cells) in the ventricles.
The biological half-life of BNP however, is twice as long as that of ANP.
Brain natriuretic peptide was originally identified in extracts of porcine brain, but in humans it is produced mainly in the cardiac ventricles.

Three peptide receptors are known, two of which express quanylate cyclase activity (GC-A or ANP-A and GC-B or ANP-B), while the third (ANP-C) is probably responsible for the clearance of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) from the circulation and does not play a role in signal transduction [1, 2].
