Yamagata Prefecture is situated in the northeast of Japan's island of Honshu.
Yamagata is bordered by the Sea of Japan and by Akita, Miyagi, Fukushima, and Niigata prefectures.
Yamagata Prefecture is also known for its local dialect Yamagata-ben, sometimes thought of as backward sounding and the butt of jokes in other parts of Japan.

 ATSUMI-MACHI
Atsumi Town is south of Tsuruoka City and north of Niigata Prefecture facing the Japan Sea.
Since Atsumi is mostly mountainous it not only has the best of both land and sea foods, but also a beautiful rugged coastline.
The town is also well-known for one of Yamagata's largest hot springs, Atsumi Onsen, and recently is putting effort into the development of facilities for marine sports and leisure.

After I left Yamagata for a week in Tokyo, I can remember sitting in the second floor at McDonalds looking out of a busy street in Shibuya, one of the trendy districts in Tokyo, and again found myself staring at the all the "foreigners", of which I myself was one.
She thought it was possible they were permanent residents in Yamagata, and thought that they knew all the foreigners in the area.
Even within Yamagata itself there is a significant difference between areas in language and culture.
