Attack ad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An attack ad in election terms is an advertisement whose message is meant as an attack against another candidate or political party.
Attack ads were used with great success by the campaign of George H.W. Bush against Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis in the 1988 presidential campaign.
One example of an attack ad backfiring was during the 1993 federal election in Canada when the Progressive Conservative Party attacked Liberal Party leader Jean Chrétien by mocking his facial deformity.

MPR: Adwatch: Attack ad goes after Wellstone
Ad analyst Ron Faber, a communications professor at the University of Minnesota, says the ad is almost laughable.
Wellstone says the ad is "1,000 percent distortion." Earlier this month, Wellstone voted against permanently repealing the estate tax, which is being phased out over the next decade, but would then be reinstated in 2010.
Coleman television ads have been running for months, but Faber says Wellstone, as the incumbent, didn't need to be up on television as early as his challenger.

The disputed ad ran for about 24 hours in North Florida, and accused Bill McCollum of supporting a bill in Congress "granting homosexuals special rights." Martinez's ad was part of an aggressive strategy in the final days to raise doubts about McCollum with conservatives on stem cell research and hate-crime laws with tougher penalties for crimes against gays.

The ad, paid for by a group that calls itself Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, claims the Democratic presidential nominee (and nine of his Vietnam crew mates) fabricated stories to secure his medals for bravery -- and then betrayed everyone who served in Vietnam by opposing the war after he returned home.
None of the 13 veterans appearing in the ad actually served in the same swift boat that Kerry commanded in Vietnam and their statements contradict the testimony of veterans who did.
The Swift Boat ad was produced by the political advertising firm also responsible for producing attack ads that questioned McCain’s military service when he was running against Bush in 2000.

Republicans are claiming today that the ad is substantive because it addresses Gore's pledge to launch his presidency with campaign reform.
So the RNC ad comes across as a punch out of the blue, allowing Democrats to frame the contest (as they're doing today) as a choice between the candidate of issues and the candidate of personal attacks.
But it's certainly not a matter of "reinvention." I know why the ad uses this example—the Bush campaign was clearly desperate to begin airing its precious footage of Gore with a Buddhist monk, which is Republican synecdoche for the vice president being a dirty rotten scoundrel.
