Topic: Attack helicopters

Military Attack Helicopters | Gunships | Apache | Cobra etc
Helicopter gunships have been around since the early 60s and started to prove themselves in the Vietnam War in the form of both armed troop transports and as dedicated weapons platforms.
Until the Vietnam war, military helicopters were mostly used for evacuating wounded troops.
These attack helicopters were designed with a confrontation with the Soviet Union in mind.

Military helicopters - dKosopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Helicopter transports tend to have less capacity than fixed wing cargo planes, and armed helicopters tend to be more lightly armed and armored than close air support fixed wing aircraft.
Helicopters also generally require more maintenance than fixed wing planes (because they have more moving parts), tend to be more sensitive to environmental conditions, perform less well at high altitudes, and consume more fuel per mile travelled than fixed wing aircraft.
All of the military's reconnaisance and heavy lift helicopter designs, as well as its legacy light transport and anti-submarine warfare helicopters first came into service in a five year period from 1959-1964, although all which are still in service have had some form of upgrades in the past four decades.

 Helicopters
Heavily armed attack helicopters are seen as having a key role on the modern battlefield, providing rapid fire support to friendly troops and allowing commanders to strike deep behind enemy lines.
As battlefield threats multiply, attack helicopters are beginning to field new self-protection systems ranging from passive devices such as armour protection for key systems on the airframe and the flight crew, to a whole range of active systems.
Attack helicopters are now a common feature in most modern armies’ inventories and few soldiers would want to go into battle without the re-assurance that a heavily armed helicopter is hovering nearby, ready for a call to action.

The AH-64A Apache helicopter is a heavily armed attack helicopter used by the U.S. Army.
In the mid-1950s, Colonel Jay Vanderpool, a U.S. Army helicopter officer, was granted permission to assemble a ragtag collection of helicopters and equip them with weapons to assess their ability to conduct offensive operations.
After initial U.S. experience in Vietnam, where helicopters were vulnerable to groundfire and did not receive the kind of air support from the Air Force that the Army wanted, Army leaders sought to develop a fast, heavily armed helicopter to provide suppressing fire in support of the troopships.

The finalists are: the United States' Bell Helicopter Textron AH-1z King Cobra, Italy's Agusta A-129 International, and the joint effort of Russia's Kamov and Israel's Israel Aircraft Industries, the Ka-50-2.
The helicopters will be manufactured as a joint venture between the company awarded the contract and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and will include, therefore, technology transfers as well as the actual helicopters.

High load on the main rotor during high-g maneuvering was the cause of one Ka-50 crash in June of 1998.
The decision not to use the two Ka-50 helicopters was explained by the fact that all Russian army helicopter regiments are equipped exclusively with Mil Mi-24 and Mi-8 assault helicopters, which are more than sufficient to deal with any combat situations in Chechnya.
