History of Germany - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The establishment of the Dual Alliance led Russia to take a more conciliatory stance, and in 1887, the so-called Reinsurance Treaty was signed between Germany and Russia: in it, the two powers agreed on mutual military support in the case that France attacked Germany, or in case of an Austrian attack on Russia.
But the treaty also stipulated that the religion of a state was to be that of its ruler (Cuius regio, eius religio).
Under the Treaty of Rapallo, Germany accorded the Soviet Union de jure recognition, and the two signatories mutually cancelled all pre-war debts and renounced war claims.

MEIN KAMPF by Adolf Hitler - THE FIRST PERIOD OF OUR STRUGGLE
But in those days a public mass meeting which was attended not by the small bourgeoisie but by proletarians who had been aroused by agitators, to criticize the Peace Treaty of Versailles meant an attack on the Republic and an evidence of reaction, if not of monarchist tendencies.
The moment one uttered the first criticism of the Versailles Treaty one could expect an immediate reply, which became almost stereotyped: ‘And Brest-Litowsk?’ ‘Brest- Litowsk!’ And then the crowd would murmur and the murmur would gradually swell into a roar, until the speaker would have to give up his attempt to persuade them.
It would be like knocking one’s head against a wall, so desperate were these people.

While still a soldier I had written a circular in which I contrasted the Treaty of Brest-Litowsk with that of Versailles.
As a result of the persistency with which this falsehood was repeated again and again before the masses of the people, millions of Germans saw in the Treaty of Versailles a just castigation for the crime we had committed at Brest-Litowsk.

This officer was the pilot of a Beaufort aircraft of Coastal Command which was detailed to attack an enemy battle cruiser in Brest Harbour at first light on the morning of 6th April 1941.
From the beginning there was little prospect that the 24-year-old Campbell and his crew of three would survive the attack on the Gneisenau.
There is every possibility that Britain, then fighting alone, may not have been able to continue the war against Hitler's Germany, if Campbell's attack had not crippled the German battle cruiser Gneisenau, and made the supreme sacrifice.

The following day at 1055, Esmonde was told that there was a possible target for his squadron, though by this time, the three capital ships, their escort ships, and a substantial cover of Luftwaffe fighters had left Brest undetected and had succeeded in getting well up the English Channel without coming under attack.
Esmonde was subsequently posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry in leading the squadron into battle, and all the survivors were decorated for their bravery in pressing home their attacks against overwhelming odds.
All aircrew that died in the attack were posthumously awarded a Mention in Despatches - which at that time was the next highest decoration after the VC which could be awarded to someone killed in action.

The Frenchman, however, is probably unsure that the five silver pieces he's offering to the English fleet in Yorkshire will be sufficient to bribe that unit, and so he could be afraid that this fleet could act against his wishes and either support the London army or attack the French fleet in the North Sea.
To ensure that this attack is sufficient, France would need to make sure that the English army in London is not supported in place by the Yorkshire fleet.
Let's say that France has launched an attack on England, and has surrounded the English army in London with two fleets -- in the English Channel and the North Sea.
