Attention can also be split, as when a person drives a car, puts on makeup, and talks on a cell phone at the same time.

 Attention - WikEd
Attention may be conscious in that some stimului are actively selected out of the total input, though we are not explicitly aware of the factors which cause us to perceive only some small part of the total input of stimuli (Reber and Reber, 2001, p.62).
In other words, attention is an act or process of focusing on one or more information in the content of one's consciousness to provide special clearance to essentials by restricting one's sensory input from the environment's unwanted aspects(http://www.geocities.com/cncntrtn/index).

Attention Info - Encyclopedia WikiWhat.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Attention in its colloquial sense is conscious concentration on something, such as listening carefully to what someone is saying, or noticing something.
Again, your attentional system is required: while it was helping you to concentrate by filtering out the noises coming through the window, the sensations from your body, maybe even the growing hunger you would otherwise have felt just moments ago, it now has to shift from the book to the phone.
It thus becomes clear that there are several levels and areas of attention that have to be distinguished when studying attention scientifically: Visual and auditory attention, top-down and bottom-up controlled attention, and so on.

Classics in the History of Psychology -- James (1890) Chapter 11
Attention, implying a degree of reactive spontaneity, would seem to break through the circle of pure receptivity which constitutes 'experience,' and hence must not be spoken of under penalty of interfering with the smoothness of the tale.
In myself the 'backward retraction' which is felt during attention to ideas of memory, etc., seems to be principally constituted by the feeling of an actual rolling outwards and upwards of the eyeballs, such as occurs in sleep, and in the exact opposite of their behavior when we look at a physical thing.
If attention be the reproduction of the sensation from within, the habit of reading not merely with the eye, and of listening not merely with the ear, but of articulating to one's self the words seen or heard, ought to deepen one's attention to the latter.

Last week saw the launch of AttentionTrust.org, a non-profit hatched by Seth Goldstein, Steve Gillmor and Hank Barry which is "dedicated to promoting the basic rights of attention owners." I'm honored to be serving on the initial board of AttentionTrust.org, along with Dick Costolo and Clay Shirky.
I think part of the problem is that those of us who write about attention tend to be talking to people who already understand the concept, so I'll write this on the assumption that you have no idea what I'm talking about.
In a nutshell, the idea is that your attention data - that is, data that describes what you're paying attention to - has value, and because it has value, when you give someone your attention you should expect to be given something in return.

There is a net flow of attention towards me. If this is a reasonably polite group, there may be no great competition for your attention at the moment, but nonetheless, if there were, you would have to choose, or someone else, say the chair, would.
In a full attention economy practically all organizations will be basically temporary, either communities in which attention is shared around pretty equally, or, more often, entourages of fans who form around one or a few stars to help them achieve the performances they are attempting.
If the whole world is an attention economy, then making material goods, growing food from scratch in a garden or on a farm, or obtaining resources in any other fashion, and ultimately turning these over to you can be a direct act of attention paying.

He concludes that there are two types of arousal: a passive and general system that can raise or lower the overall level of attention, and a specific, compensatory system that allows attention to be focused on certain task or environmental stimuli.

What I want is for my agregator and other tools that pay attention to my attention to know about the aggregation of that data - the information contained therein [if the distinction’s unclear - and it shouldn’t be - see Data versus information].
Aggregators are going to have to play here too, since so much of our attention data will be collected there, and I’m beginning to think that all of this means that there won’t be one data format we can use across attention-aware platforms.

In this article, we discuss three major attention theories and why they are relevant to instructional design.
The multimode theory of attention builds on the two prior theories and adds a new dimension called, "mode of selection." Mode of selection can be viewed on a continuum with "early mode" on one end and "late mode" on the other.
A couple of things happen as you move from early to late mode of selection: the bottleneck shifts to filter input after pattern recognition, and attention capacity decreases.
