But Atticus worms his way in anyway--and the results are as exciting and packed with fascinating inside details of the BG trade as ever.
Particularly entertaining is a scene where Atticus and Natalie are hired to test the security of a safe house, using everything from unordered pizzas to volleys of tennis balls to irritate the guards.
Atticus Kodiak and his pals are a fun bunch to read about but it seems the storyline just kind of runs around and around with an ending that did not resolve much.

Bodyguard Atticus Kodiak is hired not to guard Pugh, rumored to be the target of an infamous hitman, but to guard a red herring whom Pugh's lawyers hope the assassin will mistake for Pugh.
Kodiak and his bodyguard buddies soon become victims themselves in an absurdist drama as they routinely question, doubt, then deny that far-fetched villainy is afoot, only to discover bombs, bullets, and worse awaiting them around the corner.
Kodiak not only has to protect Pugh from further assaults but has to figure out, from among a pack of suspects (both male and female), just who John Doe really is. Tiresome, preposterous plotting in an otherwise compelling tale filled with well-drawn, believable people and nicely turned- out scenes.

The book opens with professional bodyguard Atticus Kodiak at the end of his personal and professional rope - estranged from his girlfriend by an act of monumental stupidity on his part, and persona non grata in the security industry for the bad luck that seems to follow him from job to job.

Greck Rucka: Critical Condition [2001] Shaking Through.net: Books: Review
For starters, the likeable Kodiak is neither police detective, private investigator nor super-spy, but instead a professional bodyguard, a device that allows Rucka to explore a whole different patch of turf from his contemporaries, and explore it well.
Kodiak finds himself the newest tabloid target of the moment, and feels himself and his company drifting from the kind of work they'd formed to do, bogged down with high-profile babysitting details for spoiled celebrities.
Rucka's determination to fully extrapolate the real-life consequences of Kodiak's decisions is commendable, as is his willingness -- nay, his eagerness -- to shake the reader's already-diminishing sense of complacency.
