Attitude indicator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The altitude indicator (AI), also often called the artificial horizon, is an instrument used in an aircraft to inform the pilot of the altitude of the plane - it indicates attitude in both pitch (fore and aft tilt) and roll (side to side tilt).
Under some circumstances, some types of AI may "tumble", which is, they lose the ability to display anything sensible, particularly if the aircraft is in an extreme or unusual attitude, or performing aerobatics.
The display is coloured to indicate the horizon as the division between the two coloured segments, and as such is intended to be intuitive to use.

 Attitude Instrument Flying
The attitude indicator replaces the normal outside visual references; therefore, it is the principal attitude control instrument for the radial scan.
Attitude instrument flying is an extension of the concept of attitude flying.
How much to adjust the attitude or power or both is, initially, an estimate based on familiarity with the aircraft and the amount the pilot desires to change the indications on the performance instruments.

Attitude indicator and activity monitoring device - US Patent 6611783
The attitude indicator and activity-monitoring device of the present invention may additionally be referred to herein as an "attitude indicating device", or simply "device", and it generally comprises an attitude transmitter unit coupled with a receiver unit.
The appliance containing the attitude indicator may become separated from the patient if the retention mechanism, such as the adhesive layer, which holds the appliance to the patient's body fails, or if the patient accidentally or purposely removes the appliance.
Attitude indication devices can be configured for a stand-alone system wherein a single transmitter is associated with a single receiver in combination, or may alternatively be integrated into a custom or existing receiver/annunciation system and configured to receive data from any number of attitude transmitter units.

The spherical indicator 18 has indicia engraved or painted on its surface which provides both pitch and roll indications to the pilot of the aircraft in which the attitude indicator is utilized.
Through this configuration, the attitude indicator 10 simulates the relative position of an aircraft in which it is utilized.

Errors in the indications presented on the attitude indicator will result from any factor that prevents the vacuum system from operating within the design suction limits, or from any force that disturbs the free rotation of the gyro at design speed.
When the attitude indicator is in operation, gyroscopic rigidity maintains the horizon bar parallel to the natural horizon.
Another group of errors, associated with the design and operating principles of the attitude indicator, are induced during normal operation of the instrument.

 Teaching (and Learning) Good Attitudes
Using the attitude indicator, the little dot at the center is kept on the “artificial horizon” line.
Be sure to set the attitude indicator so the bar is centered in level flight first.
If necessary, the climb pitch attitude can be set by looking at the angle of the wing tips with respect to the horizon or by setting the horizon at a point along the side of the panel, but this is not as good as keeping it (and the traffic) in sight.

 The Gyro with an Attitude
An electric attitude indicator is internally similar to an air-driven one, except that the gyro rotor is driven by an electric motor rather than by an air turbine.
An attitude indicator in an autopilot-equipped airplane has two of these three-coil pickoff gizmos: one to sense the bank angle and the otherto sense the pitch angle.
The "artificial horizon bar" on the face of the attitude indicator is mechanically coupled to the gyro inside, so it remains parallel to the natural horizon.

 Instrument Flight
In the middle of the top row of the panel is the attitude indicator, or artificial horizon, the central element of the pilot's instrument scan.
For example, one manual's suggested procedure for leveling off from a climb is: note the altimeter; lower the nose on the attitude indicator; check for increasing airspeed on the airspeed indicator; check for constant heading on the heading indicator (the heading often swings to the right on level-off).
The gyro-stabilized heading indicator is required because of the errors that occur in the magnetic compass during turns, speed changes and even in turbulent air.

 NTSB - Aircraft Accident Brief
Although the pilot reported that his primary attitude indicator had failed and examination of the attitude indicator supported that such a failure had occurred, the investigation could not determine the cause of the failure in that instrument.
After first reporting that the primary attitude indicator was malfunctioning, the pilot continued flight for about 11 minutes, including two controlled heading changes, indicating that the pilot had functioning cockpit instruments and that he could control the airplane.
The following components from the right-side attitude indicator were found: the gyroscopic rotor, the rotor case cap, two pieces of the rotor case, the instrument face display, and portions of the instrument case frame.

Note, however, that the attitude indicator alone can't tell you whether the airplane is maintaining level flight, climbing, or descending.
The gyro mounted in the attitude indicator rotates in the horizontal plane and maintains its orientation relative to the real horizon as the airplane banks, climbs, and descends.
The heading indicator is an important aid because the compass is subject to errors caused by acceleration, deceleration, and the curvature of the earth's magnetic field, especially at high latitudes.
