ATTOCK, Oct 4: Social circles on Thursday demanded of the government and police high-ups to abolish the Attock Khurd check post instead of setting up Police-Public Liaison Committee to monitor its working.
He said that government had already abolished an excise check post at the same spot on the basis of serious public complaints of abuses, harassment and numerable cases of extortion, which were also a source of a lot of criticism both in the provincial as well as national assembly, they said.
The Attock Khurd Police check post was on a number of occasion abolished after some serious incidents of malpractice and corruption were reported but reopened after some time due to influence of some hidden bureaucratic and political bigwigs, the sources said.

The district was created in 1904 by the merger of Talagang tehsil from the Jhelum District and the Pindigheb, Fatehjang and Attock tehsils from Rawalpindi District of British Raj.
Attock District is bordered by the Haripur and Swabi districts of North-West Frontier Province to the north, the district of Rawalpindi to the east, the district of Chakwal ot the southeast, the district of Mianwali to the southwest, and North-West Frontier Province districts of Kohat and Nowshera to the west and northwest.
Attock fort was completed in 1583 under the supervision of Khawaja Shamsuddin Khawafi, a minister of Emperor Akbar.

On Saturday March 9 soon after Zardari was brought in an ambulance from the hospital in Islamabad for hearing in assets case against him, the security personnel at the Attock Fort forbade newsmen from entering the accountability court.
The spokesman said that having failed to prove its charges even in accountability courts the government had now resorted to hiding from the public how justice was being perverted and Zardari held a hostage to the political career of his wife.

ATTOCK, 5 Sep 2005 (IRIN) - Eviction notices and increased police harassment of Afghan refugees in recent months have forced many to opt for repatriation to Afghanistan despite security and livelihood concerns, refugees said on Monday.
This relatively prosperous Dari-speaking Afghan community in Attock is extremely reluctant to relocate its established businesses to Afghanistan where immense problems await them, they say.
Despite the fear and reluctance to go back to their country of origin, in recent weeks, over 700 Afghan families from Attock have registered with mobile repatriation teams of the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) under the agency's voluntary repatriation programme.

The finance minister led a procession of hundreds of supporters to Attock, 80 km northwest of Islamabad, to file the nomination papers, reports in Islamabad said.

ATTOCK, Pakistan, Sept 1 (UNHCR) – More than 3,000 Afghans are rolling up their carpets and packing up to go home this week from Pakistan's Attock city, bringing their renowned weaving skills back to Afghanistan.
Attock is home to 38,892 mostly-Turkmen Afghans, according to a census of Afghans in Pakistan taken earlier this year.
The agreement, which was due to expire in March 2006, was extended to December 2006 by the three parties in a meeting held in Kabul earlier this week.
