Topic: Attrition (band)

Sorted magAZine, Sordid - Advent Sleep
Attrition began making their particular blend of strange noises in the early '80s, around the same time as Bauhaus and the Virgin Prunes.
Unlike their contemporaries, Attrition never disintegrated in a blaze of "artistic differences" or "personality clashes", however, neither did they reach the heights reserved for other more durable bands like the Fields of the Nephilim or the Sisters of Mercy.
Attrition show no sign of slowing down after 17 years, and perhaps they'll become a hit for their 20th anniversary in 2002.

HEFCE : Publications : 1997 : M12/97 - International Comparison of the Cost of Teaching in Higher Education
The differences between the Bands were smallest in the USA where the concept was hardest to apply (most students take a mix of arts and science subjects) and were strongest in the Dutch and German research institutions.
For Band 1 alone, the research institutions have lower costs than their primarily teaching counterparts in all countries except the USA where the comparison is complicated by the private/public split.
For Band 2 the position is largely reversed with the research institutions having higher costs in all countries except the USA.

GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR - concert review
show consists of the band playing and a projectionist, who is a part of the band, showing films.
Without a single word said, this was portrayed strictly through their music, not even the films, which the band claims are only there to give the audience something other then the band to look at.
Even the band members were completely taken away by their own music as could be seen by their gestures as they played in the dark being illuminated only by small red lanterns and a string of blue Christmas lights.

It seems that whenever one band calls it quits, the event is usually followed in short order by the disintegration of a few others.
The announcement of the band’s demise was made official, and the story revealed in hindsight for anyone who cared to go back and piece it together.
As a band that had once been lauded by the critical establishment was subsequently devalued to a novelty status, the transformation from conquering heroes to no-account zeroes was complete.

Attrition returns with an EP (more like a single, since it only has four songs) from their forthcoming album Etude, which consists of classical interpretations of older Attrition material.

The people on the floor (some who were veterans of their last appearance in town nine years ago) chanted for an encore, the problem is that they didn't have any more material set up, so they went out and played one of their songs again so the fans could dance to one more.
Eschewing "singer-songwriter" models of creativity, the band writes songs collaboratively and collectively in its rehearsal space -- with an emphasis on songs, which, in a word, is the Prosaics' modus operandi.
They got quite drunk waiting for their turn to play, but then came on and were pure pros, and soon enough the entire crowd were dancing and moshing to the set.

While Pittsburgh's The Clearing are not a Gothic band per se, they have risen from the ashes of one of the most successful and longest running darker bands to have emerged from Pittsburgh over the past ten years, and that is the near legendary outfit The Garden.
Keep in mind that the band arrival in 1982 was long before cable TV was in every home, microwave ovens were just becoming popular, cell phones were non existent and the CD was still 2 years away from being born.
Band creator and lead vocalist Mike Score has changed the line up a few times over the past 18 years, however new and old fans alike can immediately recognize the trademark guitar licks that became their sound.

Attrition are, well, let's be honest, Attrition are awkward buggers.
Maybe that's partly their own fault - I'd avoided them for years because I thought with a name like Attrition they were probably some sort of 2nd rate heavy metal band.
For one thing, there's no such thing as an ideal starting place for the band's work, for another you really need to have heard the originals to fully appreciate the various transformations that the material has undergone.

 Attrition
Attrition have been consistently recording and touring for over fifteen years, producing some truly unique music that crosses all kinds of boundaries.
Starting out in the middle of the initial industrial/experimental scene that gave us bands like SPK and Coil, Attrition have along the way evolved into more of a darkwave act, combining elements of dark dance music, gothic, ambient, not to mention some gorgeous bits of classical and opera.
The band, which is mainly Martin Bowes with the aid of Julia Waller’s soaring vocals and Franck Matteis’s beautiful viola work, recently unleashed The Jeopardy Maze on the world.

The band ignored it and played on, giving the crowd a good mix of the hard, vocally-driven numbers and the slower, more intricate songs that showcase the talents of Carol on viola and Rene on harp instead of bass.

 Attrition - Étude
It's true that Attrition are compilation regulars - the only other artists that I can think of that turn up so regularly on obscure industrial and gothic compilations are Chris and Cosey - and thus have more of their back catalogue spread out over many compilations, but it does skew the album a little.
Since the next Attrition in the pipeline is a maxi-single of remixes (looking forward to hearing whatever it is New Mind reworked - also looking forward to hearing the remix Martin did in return for that one) I guess we'll have to wait for The Jeopardy Maze to hear.
I really do hope that Attrition don't burrow themselves too deeply into the "ethereal gothic" ghetto though, part of their appeal has always been the way they've merged different styles.
