ATUA will be, first and foremost, a comprehensive guide for researchers seeking specific archival information relating to trade unions, employer bodies and other notable entities, including some individuals, within the labour movement.
It is anticipated that researchers will come to see ATUA as a prime tool to locate the archives of trade unions and employer bodies as part of their research endeavours.
It is also hoped that funds can be found to update the information in ATUA as archives are deposited in recognised archival institutions, new histories are published or as any amalgamations and de-amalgamations occur.

 Te Atua, Henare -
Te Atua was the son of Maori aristocrats.
During a fraught visit to the area by the Ringatu founder, Te Kooti, there were accusations of witchcraft against Te Kooti, which Te Atua neutralized by having his own daughter convert to the Anglican church, in which she was followed by most of the rest of the local Ringatu flock.
This act by Te Atua greatly increased his standing in the community (his mana), and when Henare Matua died in 1894 Te Atua succeeded him as community leader, rather than his natural heir, Tipene Matua.

ATUA also includes selected events in the history of the Australian labour movement such as major strikes, lockouts and interstate congresses.
"ATUA plugs a significant gap in the scholarly infrastructure relating to trade unions and similar studies such as economic and social history, workplace relations, industrial conflict and resolution and conciliation and arbitration," says Project manager, Bruce Smith.
"Before ATUA there was no single access point from which researchers could discover which trade unions existed in Australia since the beginning of organised labour in the nineteenth century, nor one single resource that brings together all published and archival material about federally-registered trade unions and industrial bodies," he says.
